Interview with Author Misty Moncur

Posted by On December - 9 - 2011

Interview with Misty Moncur Show Notes: Misty Moncur is the author of the LDS novel, Daughter of Helaman. As her bio on her website, http://mistymoncur.blogspot.com/ states, Misty fits in writing like other people fit in breathing. She writes in the Romance, Young Adult, and Religious genres. Misty lives in Utah with her husband, her Wii-addicted son, and her curly-haired daughter. They spend a great deal of time laughing and the rest of it eating pizza . Questions discussed in the Interview: What gave you the idea of creating a young woman who is interested in joining Helaman’s army of 2000 young men? I noticed that Keturah has a very strong view of gender roles. Was that difficult to write into the Nephite culture? What kind of research did you have to do in order to write about day-to-day living in Nephite times? There are probably many members of the church that would like to study more about what Nephite life may have been like. What sources or tools would you recommend? Was... Read the rest of this entry »

“Three features—(1) fulness of doctrine, (2) power of the priesthood, and (3) testimony of Jesus Christ—explain why God has declared and why we as His servants maintain that this is the only true and living Church upon the face of the whole earth.” “So what does our testimony of Jesus Christ cause us to affirm? Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God, the Eternal Father. He is the Creator of this world. Through His incomparable mortal ministry, He is our teacher. Because of His Resurrection, all who have ever lived will be raised from the dead. He is the Savior, whose atoning sacrifice paid for the sin of Adam and opened the door for us to be forgiven of our personal sins so that we can be cleansed to return to the presence of God, our Eternal Father. This is the central message of the prophets of all ages.” ~~~~ Like millions of others, I will add my personal witness to that of the Apostle, Elder Oaks, and witness that the Holy Ghost has, after much study... Read the rest of this entry »

Praise to the Man Praise to the Man is one of my favorite hymns (have you noticed how many favorites I have?). I wish I could have put this out last week to commemorate the martyrdom of Joseph, Hyrum, and Samuel Smith. Every time I read the account, I’m deeply touched by everything it implies. I love the detail of the incident recorded in the LDS Institute Manual, Church History in the Fulness of Times. It’s a long account, but I think it’s worth reading: The Tragedy at Carthage The next morning, Thursday, 27 June, “Joseph requested Dan Jones to descend and inquire of the guard the cause of the disturbance in the night. Frank Worrell, the officer of the guard, who was one of the Carthage Greys, in a very bitter spirit said, ‘We have had too much trouble to bring Old Joe here to let him ever escape alive, and unless you want to die with him you had better leave before sundown; . . . and you’ll see that I can prophesy better than Old Joe. . . .’ “Joseph... Read the rest of this entry »

Mitt Romney’s Religion

Posted by On June - 4 - 2011

Salt Lake Temple I read a letter to the editor this morning about Mitt Romney’s religion. The author suggested Romney should used his political platform to advance his religion. This is what the letter writer advocated: “. . . he should actively make his Mormonism an issue and show how its tenets and values support his candidacy, and not downplay his faith or its contradictions with what other Christians believe.” I’m certain the writer is a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), but he is sadly misinformed about the role religion must never play in the political arena. I write a blog about my views on politics and religion, attesting these topics are not taboo topics. There is nothing wrong with merging those two topics in the public discourse of America, particularly today in the desperate straits where we find ourselves. We can and we must advocate, testify and boldly declare true religious doctrine, and not be... Read the rest of this entry »
