Can a person have a testimony of a doctrine and not live it? Conversely, can a person not live a doctrine and still have a testimony of it? I suppose the question really comes down to (as so many seem to) a matter of definitions. That is, is a testimony an all-or-nothing thing? Is it binary, like a light switch? Can you only be “a little bit” pregnant? Only mostly dead? A testimony is Read More →

"Youth Conference was Awesome!"
That was my son’s Facebook status a few weeks ago after he returned from a couple of days in Kirtland. It’s the kind of thing that makes the heart of a parent of a mid-teen soar, especially when for a long time that mid-teen seemed to find something to complain about with everything he did, especially at church. I don’t know exactly what made his youth conference awesome. (I do know he was really impressed by the bathrooms at the Morely Farm – very high-tech ones in a trailer, but with wood floors and MoTab music piped in…) In any case, I’m glad that the conference was awesome enough for him to note it. There’s that saying that 90% of life is just showing up. I don’t think that’s really true, but I do think it may be true for teenagers. Getting them to the right place at the right time is crucial to the development of testimony, values and character (hopefully those three intersect well). The summer before my senior year, I was away from home when my mom signed... Read the rest of this entry »

On the language of testimony
I love the ward I live in. It’s a rather mature suburban ward in the Midwestern United States. There’s a mix of local members – some second- or third-generation, some converts – and transplants from elsewhere because of large companies who hire people from top grad schools (including BYU). Though employment used to be dominated by one or two companies in the ward, it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I’d say the ward is quite conservative politically. I cringe every so often at something I hear in a hallway conversation or at a table at a ward activity, but we don’t preach politics from the pulpit or in the classroom as far as I can tell. Though our ward is economically diverse, it skews to higher end of the income scale in our stake. And it’s clearly a “teach from the manual” ward – a point driven by our stake president (who resides in the ward) and those who serve with him. (“Teach from the manual” does not necessarily mean “Ready, Aim, Read” however.) After... Read the rest of this entry »
A Heartfelt Adventure
I cannot believe that I am posting my last blog post as a missionary. Looking back on the past two years and my experiences during that time is incredible. Knowing where I was then and where I am now has strengthened my testimony in the Gospel, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and most importantly in my Savior Himself, even Jesus Christ. As I have been saying goodbye to fellow missionaries and friends that I have been teaching (fittingly in French the word for investigators is amis de l’église which means friends of the church , I have been reflecting a lot about what I have learned and accomplished during this time. During this time, I couldn’t help but think of reading. Many of you know that I love to read and that I have a love for many odd books that most people don’t find very enjoyable because they are too long or difficult to read or something along those lines. At this point of my life where my mission is about to end, I... Read the rest of this entry »
Have I done any Good In His/Her World Today?
What did I do to help shape his/her world today? This is a question mothers and mother-figures often ask themselves. The discussion of motherhood seems to arouse strong emotions in us. We all come to the discussion with our own personal experience, yet one thing that we can all agree on is the relationship (or lack thereof) between a mother and a child is a vital part of helping to shape us. And how we see ourselves in the world. The relationship with our mother often establishes a pattern of future relationships.Which is why many of us will sit in church today silently battling the internal conflict of the “Good” mother. As Sista LaKeysha (a safe name for us because there isn’t a LaKeysha in our wards…currently) stands up today and shares how wonderful her mother was. You’ve heard it before: “I’m so grateful for my wonderful mother and the example she was to me growing up. Everyday when my 12 brothers and sisters and I came home from school, my mother had fresh baked... Read the rest of this entry »
The Holy Ghost – Some Remarkable Quotes
“Furry” tulip in front of Rogue Creamery This post today originally started in a completely different direction. But I was so impressed with some quotes from Joseph B. Wirthlin’s talk I just HAD to share them. They gave me goosebumps. Elder Wirthlin was one of those apostles that didn’t capture my attention when he spoke, but reading his talks afterward is consistently sublime. I’ve found some of the apostles are master orators and convey so much in the moment through the spoken word, and some are master writers and their messages have a profound effect when reading them later. “If they would open their hearts to the refining influence of this unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, a glorious new spiritual dimension would come to light. Their eyes would gaze upon a vista scarcely imaginable. They could know for themselves things of the Spirit that are choice, precious, and capable of enlarging the soul, expanding the mind, and filling the... Read the rest of this entry »
