How Americans View Mormonism

Posted by On March - 28 - 2011

We spent an hour with Gary Lawrence last night. He was gracious enough to come up to visit our stake in Camarillo from his home in Orange County. Dr. Lawrence is an American opinion pollster who also happens to be a Latter-day Saint. He has been travelling around the church sharing the results of a poll he conducted in the spring of 2007 on American’s perception of Latter-day Saints in the United States. He published a book in 2008 with the findings of his poll, How Americans View Mormonism: Seven Steps to Improve Our Image. Dr. Lawrence received a PhD in communications psychology from Stanford University in 1972. He said that of over twenty doctoral candidates in his group, he was the only LDS, Republican, conservative hawk among them. So he knows a little about being in the minority. Lawrence Research Now if you know anything about recent events in California, you’ll recognize that Gary’s business, Lawrence Research was the opinion polling company that was heavily involved in Proposition... Read the rest of this entry »

The More Good Foundation has put out a call for Mormon temple photos and reflections. The following is from their blog: More Good Foundation would like to include your reflections upon temples and temple worship on our websites. These should be personal — in the first-person voice, 300 to 1000 words. Be sure to tell us which temple is closest to you, or where you were when these thoughts occurred to you. Include a photo of yourself or of you and significant others if you’d like (preferably on temple grounds) and a simple sentence giving us permission to mount your article and photo(s) online. Click here for a sample article on Mormon temples, written by a lay member, for you to consider. We’re looking for authentic thoughts and feelings to share with the world. We are not necessarily looking for gospel scholars’ doctrinal statements–though those are welcome–but our desire is to capture the kaleidoscope of faith-promoting insights and experiences we have as we regularly worship... Read the rest of this entry »

Members Sharing the Gospel Online

Posted by On August - 25 - 2010

In the September Ensign, the article “Role of Members Important in Sharing the Gospel Online” points out a real problem about the information people find about the Church online. “Missionaries across the world have encountered a problem in recent years: after only a visit or two, an investigator who had shown real interest cuts off contact. Researchers have found that most of those investigators have one thing in common: they lose interest after finding negative, inaccurate information about the Church online.” As recent as six years ago, the general information you could find on the Internet about the Church was largely negative, and growing in its negativity. It is now in a reverse trend. “Six years ago 80 percent of search engine results for the term ‘Mormon’ were negative or inaccurate. Today the situation has improved. In some countries, Internet search results for ‘Mormon’ are now up to 80 percent positive.” “Why the significant change? In addition to... Read the rest of this entry »

LDS Apostle Blogs

Posted by On August - 19 - 2010

An LDS apostle, Elder Quentin L. Cook, has written a blog post “Partnering With Our Friends of Other Faiths” on the Web site Patheos.com. This may be the first publicly posted blog by an LDS apostle. Patheos.com is a site dedicated to religious and spiritual dialogue. This summer, they have focused on a different religious tradition each week in a section called the Future of Religion. Last week, the focus was on the Future of Mormonism. In addition to Elder Cook, many authors contributed, including Michael Otterson, managing director of the Church Public Affairs Department, who wrote “The Church’s Reputation: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunity.” Since at least 2007, the Church has encouraged members to blog and engage in Internet conversations.
