President Eyring on Technology

Posted by On August - 23 - 2011

“The Lord’s plan is to advance ever more rapidly His word and His works and the effects of His gospel throughout the world,” President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, said. He noted that the Lord “has revealed the technology that enables the Church to take full advantage of these advances,” but added that while technology can and does bless lives, “never forget that while we have computers, cameras, microphones, fiber-optic networks, clouds, and satellites, we have failed if we do not rely on the Holy Ghost.” He said, “If our technology does not improve the lives of others and help bring them home to [the Lord], we have missed the mark.” President Eyring made the comments at the dedication of the Broadcasting Building and the Information Technology Building at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, on Friday, August 12, 2011. Sources: LDS.org and LDS Newsroom How have you recently used technology in your personal or church life that furthered... Read the rest of this entry »

The Mormon.org website was selected as one of the Interactive Media Awards (IMA) “Top Ten Websites of the Year.” Mormon.org was first launched in 2001, then was  redesigned in 2010 to focus on individual members of the Church. Rather than just being a resource to help others learn what Mormons believe, the site now introduces visitors to thousands of Mormons who share what they believe and how their faith impacts their lives. Mormon.org has as many as a million unique visitors per month. Can you think of a way to share the Mormon.org website with your friends? Share on Facebook  Read More →

Publish Your Own Newspaper

Posted by On June - 28 - 2011

Ever wanted to publish your own daily newspaper? Now you can do it for free at Paper.li.  You set it up by identifying the keywords you are interested in and it creates content using these keywords found in Facebook posts and Twitter tweets. It then updates the content in your newspaper daily, twice daily, or weekly. It’s a way to create your own newspaper with the topics you’re interested in. It’s also a good way to promote good LDS content on the Internet. I set up the Richman Times in about 10 minutes. As you set up your paper, I recommend that you avoid including all content from Twitter tags like #lds or #mormon, because unscrupulous people at times include those tags in degrading content. Instead, include content from specific Twitter users that you trust or people you follow. Think of a good, uplifting subject and create a newspaper about it, then share it with your friends. Seth Adam Smith’s YouTube Channel

Posted by On June - 23 - 2011

You may be interested in watching some of the videos on Seth Adam Smith’s YouTube Channel. Seth has created many uplifting and inspiring films on topics such as Joseph Smith and Nauvoo, telling stories through artwork, missionary work in Russia, traveling to distant countries to support non-profits, and sharing stories of remarkable individuals. Through his several websites, channels, and blogs, he has accumulated over 12 million video views and thousands of subscribers. Seth is a good example of following the admonition to “be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness…” (D&C 58:26-28). Below is his most recent video, Joseph Smith’s Last Dream. Today is the anniversary of Joseph Smith’s Last Dream. Share on Facebook  Read More →

Sandinistas

“Everyone get down.” A rock crashed through the front window of the bus. We didn’t have to be told twice. Some passengers ducked in their seats. We got on the floor. My heart raced. The bus sped up. I looked at my companion. It was hard to see him in the dark. He seemed terrified. We held on to the seat legs for support. “Dios mío,” said one of the women. Children cried. Rocks crashed through the side windows. Glass sprayed all around us. The bus driver laid on the horn. A man shouted something in Spanish out the window. A rock hit him in the side of the face. Blood spattered the seat next to us. Several women screamed. Chickens flew in the aisle. More rocks smashed windows in quick succession. The bus hopped over obstacles in the road. Men, women and children bounced up and down. A shot rang out, then another. They came from behind us. One last rock hit the back window. The bus veered to the right in a sudden turn. The crashing rocks ceased. “Are you alright?” I asked my... Read the rest of this entry »

How Americans View Mormonism

Posted by On March - 28 - 2011

We spent an hour with Gary Lawrence last night. He was gracious enough to come up to visit our stake in Camarillo from his home in Orange County. Dr. Lawrence is an American opinion pollster who also happens to be a Latter-day Saint. He has been travelling around the church sharing the results of a poll he conducted in the spring of 2007 on American’s perception of Latter-day Saints in the United States. He published a book in 2008 with the findings of his poll, How Americans View Mormonism: Seven Steps to Improve Our Image. Dr. Lawrence received a PhD in communications psychology from Stanford University in 1972. He said that of over twenty doctoral candidates in his group, he was the only LDS, Republican, conservative hawk among them. So he knows a little about being in the minority. Lawrence Research Now if you know anything about recent events in California, you’ll recognize that Gary’s business, Lawrence Research was the opinion polling company that was heavily involved in Proposition... Read the rest of this entry »

The More Good Foundation has put out a call for Mormon temple photos and reflections. The following is from their blog: More Good Foundation would like to include your reflections upon temples and temple worship on our websites. These should be personal — in the first-person voice, 300 to 1000 words. Be sure to tell us which temple is closest to you, or where you were when these thoughts occurred to you. Include a photo of yourself or of you and significant others if you’d like (preferably on temple grounds) and a simple sentence giving us permission to mount your article and photo(s) online. Click here for a sample article on Mormon temples, written by a lay member, for you to consider. We’re looking for authentic thoughts and feelings to share with the world. We are not necessarily looking for gospel scholars’ doctrinal statements–though those are welcome–but our desire is to capture the kaleidoscope of faith-promoting insights and experiences we have as we regularly worship... Read the rest of this entry »
