This post originally appeared in April of last year. Since today is the birthday of the Relief Society (the organization for women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), we wanted to post it again.. Note: Please send any inquiries about the video directly to Natalie at nweames at (Gee)mail dot com ~by Natalie Editor’s note: Natalie kindly consented to share the Relief Society History video she put together for the women in her congregation. But first, we’d like you to get to know her a little better, and hear more about what went into making this video. I am the “Additional Weekday Meeting Coordinator” (previously Enrichment Leader) in the Relief Society [organization for women] in my ward congregation. Ironically, all but two of my three sisters and two sisters-in-law have the same calling. In my opinion, this is the best calling in the Church. I am the party planner and the person that helps coordinate the activities that allow the women to do both... Read the rest of this entry »

Blessings of Relief Society

Posted by On March - 17 - 2013

Today marks the 171th anniversary of the Relief Society, the organization for women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We’ll be posting (and re-posting) some posts on the topic of Relief Society. This post was originally published in 2008. -by Michelle I recall one of those days several years ago when I went visiting teaching. I must confess that I was not excited to go. I was tired. I didn’t feel good. I hadn’t had much downtime with my children because we have had lots of craziness (errands, doctor’s appointments, car troubles, dad out of town). More than anything, I just wanted to be cozy and comfortable at home. “Visiting teaching is never convenient,” I found myself thinking. (Truth be told, service is often not convenient.) I printed out the lesson and mused over the title: “Blessings of Belonging to Relief Society.” I found myself wondering about why the lessons in this particular year (2006) had focused on Relief Society. I felt the Spirit teaching... Read the rest of this entry »

The Errand of Angels…..

Posted by On January - 25 - 2013

From the book ‘Daughters in My Kingdom” released in 2012 for all women in the LDS church we read the following….”Elder John A. Widstoe of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles described the foundational work of the Relief Society (largest society of women in the world): ‘Relief of poverty, relief of illness; relief of doubt, relief of ignorance — relief of all that hinders the joy and progress of woman.  What a magnificent commission!’ “Latter-day Saint women, strong in faith and testimony, have truly been given the ‘errand of angels.’ Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:  ‘Every sister in this Church who has made covenants with the Lord has a divine mandate to help save souls, to lead the women of the world, to strengthen the homes of Zion, and to build the Kingdom of God.”  Daughters in My Kingdom, p. 25 Let us go forth and do so is my added prayer!  Read More →

When Jesus Christ organized His church on Earth, He chose only men to be His apostles. However, this was not because the women were unimportant or because He was discriminating towards them. Apostleship is a priesthood function, and only men hold the priesthood. However, apostleship is just one way to serve God and there are many others. As we study the New Testament, we see that Jesus Christ held women in high esteem and made them essential parts of His gospel. It was to a women that he first revealed His true identity as the Savior and it was women to whom He first appeared as a resurrected being. He taught Mary and Martha that women were to be gospel scholars as well as homemakers and that both roles were equally important. He counted several women among His close friends and spoke to them as people who mattered and as people who could live lives of faith, knowledge, and service. Mormons in modern times follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Mormon is a nickname... Read the rest of this entry »

Paul’s Manual For Getting Along

Posted by On May - 10 - 2012

Inside a typical LDS chapel for Sunday worship. Within every organization (and it doesn’t matter if it’s secular or religious) comes the challenge for everyone to get along with everyone else. No matter how altruistic or how well-meaning the group, personal chemistry gets in the way. Human nature, in general, gets in the way. Have you noticed it just takes a few individuals to stir the pot among many? There’s a few mal-contents in every crowd. Their antics are often rooted in the need to establish who is “greater than” and who is “less than” (with themselves on top, of course). It’s one of those games people play. It get’s old doesn’t it? Bless the Apostle Paul’s heart. He totally got it and gave a whole lecture on congregation dynamics. If certain people are driving you crazy…Romans 12 (New Testament) puts it all in perspective and gives us great advice on how to handle the social challenges that inevitably... Read the rest of this entry »
