The Lives of Faithful Mormons

Archive for the ‘priesthood’ Category

A disclaimer:  I have absolutely no authority to voice my opinion on any subject. I am not a professional counselor. I am not a professional “Life Coach”. I am not your church leader. I have absolutely no business telling anyone how to run their life. But here I go again anyway…  — Half my life. That’s how long I’ve been married. It is a nice feeling – I like knowing that my life with my EC has eclipsed my life without her. It has been a great 25 years so far. One of the reasons I can look back fondly is because we rarely fight. In fact, I can say with 100% confidence that we have not had a single fight, quarrel, argument, disagreement or cross word yet. Today. There are a couple of odd things about arguing with the person I love most in this life. #1: We rarely argue about anything that is actually very important. It is always dumb little stuff. (In retrospect) Think about the last argument you had. What momentous concept was it... Read the rest of this entry »

Elijah Abel: Black Mormon Pioneer

Posted by On June - 8 - 2011

Elijah Abel, Black Mormon Pioneer Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the restoration of the priesthood to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of African decent. On June 8, 1978 LDS church leaders announced that the priesthood would be extended to Mormon men of every race. Those who were there for that remarkable day have said that they can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. While many of us have heard the stories of how the world and members of the church felt on this day, few may know the story of Elijah Abel. Elder Abel was was the first black Elder and Seventy in the LDS church and one of the few black members in the early history of  the church to receive the priesthood. He was born a slave on July 25, 1808, in Maryland, and it is believed that he escaped slavery into Canada by using the underground railroad. Elijah Abel was baptized in September of 1832 by Ezekiel Roberts.... Read the rest of this entry »

While we wait for the delayed broadcasts and transcripts of this years BYU Women’s Conference general sessions, enjoy some summary posts and news stories about what was discussed. From LDS Church News From the blog Chocolate on My Cranium: BYU Women’s Conference 2011: Sister Julie B. Beck Highlights: Elder Bednar’s message followed the theme about small and simple things. “I believe many, if not all, of the most satisfying and memorable accomplishments in our homes, in the Church, in our jobs and professions and in our communities will be the product of this important spiritual pattern — of small and simple things,” Elder Bednar said. “We should find great comfort in the fact that ordinary people who faithfully, diligently and consistently do simple things that are right before God will bring forth extraordinary results.” Sister Beck talked about a variety of topics, including the Relief Society motto, “Charity Never Faileth, ” and also on the... Read the rest of this entry »

Hierarchy

Posted by On March - 19 - 2011

What is “hierarchy”? Let me answer in the words of etymology dictionary: c.1343, from O.Fr. ierarchie,  from M.L. hierarchia  ”ranked division of angels” (in the system of Dionysius the Areopagite), from Gk. hierarchia  ”rule of a high priest,” from hierarches  ”high priest, leader of sacred rites,” from ta hiera  ”the sacred rites” (neut. pl. of [...]  Read More →

On motherhood, fatherhood and priesthood

Posted by On March - 3 - 2011

I have generally given up trying to explain why God does things. There was a time in my life when it was important for me to have that answer (and to share it), but I guess I’ve settled into a different place in my development. Now I can observe what God does and not worry about why. It is what it is, I tell myself, and that’s ok. Not everyone is where I am, and that’s ok, too. For some, a quest of the “why” is vitally important. Others want to know, but are willing to wait and see if the “why” reveals itself. And other just don’t worry about it anymore. I think I’m somewhere between the second and third. Some folks worry about why women don’t hold the priesthood. And others, hoping perhaps to assuage the need to know why, have offered the idea that men can hold the priesthood but women can have children, as if those two are equal endowments meant to offset one another. This much I know: men hold the priesthood and women can have babies. And in the LDS church,... Read the rest of this entry »
