I purchased a useful little book last week called It’s In the Bag by Michelle and Trent Snow. Michelle is affectionately called “The Bag Lady” because of her Bag Meal System. The book is well laid out with easy to follow instructions. Over a hundred recipes extend its usefulness for as long as you need to store food. The system is simple. I put everything I need for a meal in a bag. As I read through the first chapter it really does turn out to be simple — even a man could do it. Michelle guided me through 12 advantages of Bag Meals from “having organised meals ready” to “an easy way to rotate my food storage.” There are photographs too for the folks that never read the instructions but want to get moving. The bulk of the book is taken up with bags of recipes — or perhaps recipes for bags? Now in my home I hardly ever cook and when I do it is beans on toast (now that wouldn’t need a very big bag). But a lot of these Bag Meal recipes... Read the rest of this entry »

Why the Latter-day Saints Prepare
I gave the following talk in my ward today: photo credit: Linda & Clark Latter-day calamities Ask somebody how they feel after reading or watching an hour’s worth of news, and they’re likely to reply that it makes them feel depressed. It seems that the entire world is in a constant state of commotion, whether due to natural or man-made disasters, which perhaps led to Enoch asking the Lord “when shall the earth rest?” How are we, the Latter-day Saints, to view and react to these events? Brigham Young reminded us that what we now consider to be a barrage of bad news is merely a preface to the clamor of latter-day calamities the Lord will unleash in the future: Do you think there is calamity abroad now among the people?… All we have yet heard and all we have experienced is scarcely a preface to the sermon that is going to be preached. When the testimony of the Elders ceases to be given, and the Lord says to them, ‘come home; I will now preach My own sermons to the nations... Read the rest of this entry »
Procrastinating the Day of Preparedness
photo credit: Michelle Cordes Fancy televisions. 4-wheelers. Boats. Video game systems. Fancy clothing and jewelry. These and a slew of other material objects are some of the distractions by which people refuse to prepare themselves and their families for the storms on the horizon. In our culture of consumerism, instant gratification is a given; rarely do people acquire an adequate supply of goods to see them through troubled times. This perpetual mode of procrastination has ill effects felt not only by those making such choices, but by those around them as well. Of course, those in this narrow state of mind do not even consider the consequences of their choices, let alone how they might affect others. Their focus on the here and now blinds them of any need to reflect on the future. A constant stream of entertainment pacifies them into a brain-numbing trance where, like the drug addict looking for the next fix, their cares take no thought of distant events. Imagine: tomorrow, the coordinated... Read the rest of this entry »
How Prepared Are You???
Recently I’ve attended several preparedness seminars. Some were sponsored by the church, others were community events. At each one I have learned things that have helped me get more prepared and feel more ready for future events that may occur. The greatest thing I’ve learned is that there is a great deal of peace that comes by being prepared. Those who choose to stick their heads in the sand — are also those who don’t have that peace. Here is an article that was on-line today. I’m sharing it in hopes that it will be of benefit to all of you as well.http://www.ldsmag.com/emergency/090610culture.html Read More →

Mormon’s Prepared for Economic Down-turn
An article was recently published by the Salt Lake Tribune that highlights The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or Mormons, system for taking care the poor and needy. The Mormon church’s welfare operations are designed to help those unable to provide for their own basic needs because of lost employment or other challenges. With so much news on soaring unemployment rates and the poor economy, news on such miraculous efforts are very news-worthy. Part of the article states : “Mormons may be among the country’s best prepared to weather the current economic hard times. Since the Great Depression, church leaders have preached a doctrine of self-reliance and selflessness, calling on members to plan for their own future while tending to the needs of others.” Such advise is wise in our economic times and preparedness has always been for the wise. To geet more information on... Read the rest of this entry »
