Review: The Blind Side

Posted by On November - 30 - 2009

Last weekend, Alvin took me to see the movie about Baltimore Raven Michael Oher The Blind Side. What an absolutely amazing movie. I laughed, I cried and my heart was indelibly touched and permanently changed. Michael Oher was a young man who was born into a severely disadvantaged life. One of 13 children, if sportscasters are to be believed, Michael struggled to get an education while getting all work he could to be a help to his brothers and sisters. As a young boy he was separated from his mother (she was drug addicted and DCFS took the children away) and placed into foster care. He ran away from one home after another, back to his mother, to take care of her. Enter a family who took Michael in, fell in love with him and made him one of their own. From that point, every life he touched was permanently changed. I will leave you to go watch this movie, because the rest of the story, taking us to NFL rookie, Michael Oher, with a starting position on the Baltimore Ravens, is one every single... Read the rest of this entry »

See No Evil

I love watching movies! At home on the couch, at the theater, with friends, with family, in sickness or in health–it’s all fun! But risky as well. Risky, that is, to my spirituality if I am not careful with what I choose to view. During high school, I used my best friend and a newspaper column as movie screeners. Then a former seminary teacher introduced me to a great Web site and a friend showed me another one. Both are free with a list of movies from about 15 years ago to current releases. [Click on the name for the link to the site.] Screenit: This Web site gives a short and full summary of the movie plot and the content, divided into categories. I like this site because it is very explicit: I know what language is in the movie and how many times it occurs. Note: In order to review movies before the release date, you must become a member. Kids in Mind: This site is similar to screenit, but somewhat less extensive (especially in the movie summary and language department).... Read the rest of this entry »

Benjamin and Bill, What a Day

Posted by On January - 28 - 2009

I spent this last Saturday having a very diverse experience. In the early afternoon I went and saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and then that night I went to see Bill Engvall preform live. What an interesting day it made, from a somewhat high-brow epic of a movie to one of the guys from Blue Collar Comedy Tour. So, what did I think of Benjamin Button? Well my main comment is it’s really long. The movie is well filmed and well acted. Cate Blanchett was great as the female lead, Daisy. She plays the character from about age 17 on. I was impressed at how consistently she played the character, while still showing the maturing and aging of the character. The makeup and effects where astounding. I love New Orleans as the setting and it seemed to add an element of believability to the story and the characters. I did feel that the Katrina timing was a bit contrived. I think it would have been a better film if it had been about 30 minutes shorter. Now, on to Bill Engvall. I laughed... Read the rest of this entry »

Doubt — Another Movie Review

Posted by On January - 7 - 2009

With the holidays now over and life mostly back to normal, I thought it was time to post. On New Years Eve (before heading up to the city for New Year’s celebrations) I went with two good friends to see Doubt. All us had wanted to see the movie and even better we had three free passes. During the after movie “did you like it?” discussion and ride home, it was determined that it was a good movie with good acting. We all agreed that this was a thinking movie. Doubt is one of those films that you come out and your brain is going a mile a minute trying to process it. I enjoy thinking movies, (though I have to be in the right mood). I am always impressed when a film can leave me thinking about more then just where I want to go for dinner.  This film made me think about the assumptions I make about people, and their actions. Though the theme of the film was a bit heavy handed, it still made its point. Spoilers Ahead!! During the post film discussion an interesting thing happened.... Read the rest of this entry »

Twilight Movie Review

Posted by On December - 1 - 2008

I figured I would go ahead and post my thoughts on the movie version of Twilight. As I fan of the book series I was excited and apprehensive about the movie. I was a bit nervous about some of the cast (Carlisle looked to young), but felt like the movie was in good hands. As of today I have seen the movie twice and I must say it got better the second time. I saw the movie opening night with a group of friends and I was a bit underwhelmed. I thought the first half of the movie was a bit slow and I missed the scene where Alice helps Bella get ready for the Prom. (Alice is my favorite character.) After watching the movie again this past Friday, the first half seemed to move at a better pace then the first time I saw it. Though I still wished that Alice and Bella’s friendship had been shown a bit more. So overall I like the movie. My rating: Worth full price  Read More →
