When the Lord Calls You…
My parents moved to Alabama. Two months ago my dad volunteered for a one-week missionary & construction trip serving an area devastated by last spring’s overactive tornado season. By the time he returned home, the Lord had spoken to his heart and he knew he was being called to dedicate more time to the work and the people in the hills of Alabama. Everything else just fell into place… Within weeks the finances to cover obligations at home had wondrously appeared, as well as the beginnings of what they would need to move from Iowa to Alabama and modestly survive while they are there. Circumstances at my mother’s job had been building towards an opportunity for long-term leave for quite awhile and made sense completely as soon as this opportunity was presented to her. And another family member seeking a new beginning in her own life was right there to take over the day-to-day responsibilities my parent’s would be leaving behind for... Read the rest of this entry »
A Bublé Moment
There are times when I go to bed feeling as if the weight of the world is on my shoulders. Money, work, family, and the disintegration all around me can weigh heavy. But there is always tomorrow… Have you ever… Woken up the next morning with an entirely different outlook on life? A new dawn? A new day? Have you ever… Been filed with new solutions to old problems? Brimming with hope and excitement to right the wrongs around you? Have you ever.. Been filled with so much energy and so much motivation that you can’t possibly stay in bed for one more minute? No? Me neither. . Read More →
Doing Something That Makes You Happy
I went to a free concert last Friday with my family to see a band called Moosebutter. Self-billed as a comedy acapella group, I had never seen them in person, but was promised a night of hilarity. Not necessarily because the band is good or funny, but because my in-laws are notorious for making fun of something until you’re laughing so hard they start laughing at you. Moosebutter on Friday night consisted of four middle-aged guys (I say middle-aged hesitantly because one of them went to school with my husband and that would mean I’ve now labelled myself with that heavy moniker) jumping around and shouting out melodic song parodies. I think sometimes they have only two guys and maybe sometimes they have five or six. This night there was a beat-boxer, a phenomenal falsetto, and two other guys. About every 10 minutes I found them genuinely entertaining, and then I morphed back into complete boredom and confusion. The show went on for nearly... Read the rest of this entry »
How To [Insert Your Biggest Dream Here]
No, this article is not about how to insert your biggest dream here. The title is my attempt at being witty and clever. You’ll figure it out. Many of us get big ideas. I get them almost daily it seems. Very few of us act on our big ideas. Even fewer carry out the ideas to completion. We get excited and start working feverishly on our new project. There is a rush. We get a burst of energy and go to work. This excitement fades quickly sometimes and other times we can sustain the motivation for a while. In almost any case the motivation fades. Successful people are those who can overcome this process and stay dedicated. We all (anyone reading this blog) want to be awesome. If you don’t that’s okay but you might as well leave now because I mostly want to talk about how to be awesome. My Bad Example: Do As I Say, Not As I Do Last October I had a great idea for a website. It was going to be amazing. It is called CraftBattles.com The idea started from wanting... Read the rest of this entry »
Don’t Wait For The Perfect Opportunity
It may never come and you may miss a great opportunity. I have read a lot about successful individuals and one thing sticks out in my mind. They don’t wait around for things to happen. They make them happen. What are you waiting for? Waiting for things to slow down at work, waiting for the kids to start school, for the kids to get out of school? Whatever you are waiting for won’t make achieving your goals easier. You’ll be older, slower and you have found a dozen more reasons to wait. Just Do It!!!! Do It Now!!! 10 Rules for Life
by Cherie Carter-Scott 1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period. 2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.” 3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.” 4. Lessons are repeated until they are learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson. 5. Learning lessons does not end. There’s no part of life that doesn’t contain its lessons. If you’re alive, that means there are still lessons to be learned. 6. “There” is no better a place than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another... Create A Personal Mission Statement
Once I created my personal mission statement it was a matter of days until I discovered how I would achieve my mission. During an internet browsing session last week I came across FranklinCovey’s Mission Statement Builder. The site gives some examples from people like Ghandi, Benjamin Franklin and Martin Luther King Jr. You start getting inspired about your potential and how your unique talents might be able to contribute to the good of society. Then you start the program and answer some questions. There were quite a few questions and I tried to be honest and sincere in my answers. Here are the results… My Mission Statement: I am at my best when I am under pressure and tight deadlines. I will try to prevent times when I have a lot of free time or no pressure. I will enjoy my work by finding employment where I can solve problems, learn and be creative.. I will find enjoyment in my personal life through learning new things and improving myself.. I will find opportunities to... Read the rest of this entry »
It’s What Motivates Me
I’m a spur-of-the-moment kind of girl. Not necessarily the drop everything and go kind of girl that I used to be, but an instant planner. My husband can mention a random event in passing and 15 minutes later I’m bombarding him with the best dates to do it and how to get there and where we should stay and how much the whole thing is going to cost. At that moment I am 100% ready to go….15 minutes (or less)…and my husband is left trying to remember if he was the one who’d set the whole trip in motion. So, what motivates me? Let me walk you through the three adventures I’ve wanted to embark on just this week. To witness, or be a part of, history. My sister called this week to ask what channel would be broadcasting the launch of space shuttle Discovery. Three minutes before blast off we found it on CNN and then the NASA channel. I recorded it and watched later with my family. Watching instantly took me back to 3rd... Read the rest of this entry »
How To Get What You Want
The concept is simple yet complicated; only because the human mind is so complex. We are capable of the impossible but naturally attracted to mediocrity. It takes real effort to achieve anything. Many times all we need is a spark, a glimpse of our potential to give us hope to drive us to action. Wish you had a Magic Genie? This is as close as you will get. Step 1: Decide What You Want Run a marathon, Earn $1M, Learn a second language, Lose 30 lbs. The trick here is that there are endless choices of what you can do. Sometimes what we want to do is relax, coast by, watch TV, play video games, sleep, eat. We say we want to lose weight but do we want it more than that can of Dr. Pepper in our hand and bag of Doritos? Step 2: Convince Yourself You Really Want It List the benefits to getting what you want. What might you have to sacrifice? Do the benefits outweigh the sacrifice? How far are you willing to go to get what you want? Are you willing to lose sleep, income, free time? Step... Read the rest of this entry »
