For over 150 years, there has been contention about whether the LDS temple ceremonies were essentially stolen from the initiation rituals of Freemasonry. As it happens, I am a Freemason; of course, long-time readers of this blog are well-aware that I am a Latter-day Saint, as well. Being intimately familiar both with the LDS temple ceremonies and the Masonic initiation rituals, I have some thoughts on this matter. I shall be presenting those thoughts as a streaming video on the Worldwide Exemplification of Freemasonry website (http://www.weofm.org/) this Saturday, August 20, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Thereafter, the hourlong presentation will be available through the Video tab on the WEOFM website, at least through the end of 2015. I have wanted to address the controversy on this issue in a productive way for many years. I am very grateful to the Worldwide Exemplification of Freemasonry, and its current master, Brother Albert McClelland, for giving me this opportunity to present my thoughts.... Faith in America, From My Viewpoint
As the presidential campaign season kicks off in earnest, attacks on the faith of Latter-day Saint members has begun in earnest. This is a never ending thing with Latter-day Saints. Although we are devout Christians, other faiths claim to know better than we ourselves do, and proclaim we are not Christians. Others reach way out into fantasy land and draw comparisons between despicable current figures and ancestors of long ago. I feel the need to point some very basic things out, try to correct before things get totally out-of-control, again. We have two Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons (the faith so named by someone who was not a Latter-day Saint, but the handle stuck,) in the 2012 Presidential race, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. As such, let’s go over who Latter-day Saints REALLY are, as opposed to what people really wish we were. We are devout Christians. Our 1st Article of Faith reads: “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and... Read the rest of this entry »
No... Read the rest of this entry »
Mormon Defense League
Scott Gordon of FAIR, an apologetic corpus of scholars and melange of high-powered LDS lay contributors to accessible online content on “Mormon” beliefs, announced yesterday at the inception of its annual Conference, the creation of the Mormon Defense League. This League is intended to rally to the defense of false media claims and to civilly correct rampant misinformation about members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while opening further doors to honest dialog with interested media and journalists worldwide. The time has come, increasingly in recent years, when the silent LDS majority will more directly defend longstanding mis-attributions to a Christian people of faith and re-shape and reclaim the conversation about “Mormons.” Mormons itself is a name coined by others and carried in the media. Members of the church prefer to be known as “Latter-day Saints.” FAIR and other online constituents and lay members are engaging in the... Read the rest of this entry »
Read the rest of this entry »
Mitt Romney’s Religion
Salt Lake Temple I read a letter to the editor this morning about Mitt Romney’s religion. The author suggested Romney should used his political platform to advance his religion. This is what the letter writer advocated: “. . . he should actively make his Mormonism an issue and show how its tenets and values support his candidacy, and not downplay his faith or its contradictions with what other Christians believe.” I’m certain the writer is a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), but he is sadly misinformed about the role religion must never play in the political arena. I write a blog about my views on politics and religion, attesting these topics are not taboo topics. There is nothing wrong with merging those two topics in the public discourse of America, particularly today in the desperate straits where we find ourselves. We can and we must advocate, testify and boldly declare true religious doctrine, and not be... Read the rest of this entry »
Book of Mormon Video
The Book of Mormon is the word of God, like the Bible. It is Holy Scripture, with form and content similar to that of the Bible. Both books contain God’s guidance as revealed to prophets as well as religious histories of different civilizations. While the Bible is written by and about the people in the land of Israel and surrounding areas, and takes place from the creation of the world until shortly after the death of Jesus Christ, the Book of Mormon contains the history and God’s dealings with the people who lived in the Americas between approximately 600 BC and 400 AD. In the video below, a living Apostle explains what the Book of Mormon is and how anyone can know that it is true. I have a testimony of the Book of Mormon, and this means that I have read the book, and thought about its teaching, and prayed about it, and I know by the power of the Holy Ghost that is a true book, written by ancient prophets. The Book of Mormon contains the word of God, and if we live by its... Read the rest of this entry »
