The Lives of Faithful Mormons

Archive for the ‘Mormonism’ Category

Here is another fine posting from Catherine Aurelia over at CARM (Christian Apologetic Research Ministry). This time, in a thread entitled Have We Now Reached a Point Where the Mormons are Unwilling to Defend Mormonism? This came from one of many anonymous poster (this time, an actual Evangelical Christian who claims to be tired of [...] AKPC_IDS += "250424,";Popularity: unranked [?] Read More →

Reaching for straws – meaning straw man arguments that is. Another report from an anonymous “lurker” on the Christian Apologetic Research Ministry Mormon Discussion forum has sent me this disturbing post, and subsequent responses. The title of the Post is “The Mormon Pioneers” Catherine Aurelia initially posts the following for discussion: You know, for years [...] AKPC_IDS += "250127,";Popularity: unranked [?] Read More →

It is amazing that Christian Apologetic Research Ministry employ’s a double standard toward those who are members of the Latter-day Saint Christian Faith and those who claim to be “Evangelical Christians”. This was sent to me as a request to post and expose the double standards of those “CARMITE Evangelical’s” regarding rule violations, board suspensions, [...] AKPC_IDS += "249976,";Popularity: unranked [?] Read More →

Questions and Answers about Mormon Women

Posted by MormonWomen On August - 27 - 2010

This post has been edited from the original. Have you had a chance to look at the new mormon.org? Besides the many profiles of Mormons you can browse (including photos), or pages about Mormon values and Mormon beliefs, you can find responses from Mormons on frequently asked questions about Mormonism. Obviously, our website focuses heavily on the lives of Mormon women, so today we wanted to point you to mormon.org’s FAQ about Mormon women. Find answers about the Relief Society, about roles of men and women in marriage, and about  what Mormon women do in the Mormon Church. You will also find responses in that section about why Mormon women don’t hold the priesthood — and why most of us really are okay with that. There’s much more to God’s plan than who holds what position in the Church structure. In fact, concern about or glory in or seeking for position is antithetical to the gospel of Jesus Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And... Read the rest of this entry »

Measuring Motherhood

Posted by Michelle On August - 26 - 2010

~by Michelle “So, what did you do today?” It seems a harmless question, but for a long time as a mother of little children, this regular inquiry from my husband (simply a kind gesture of showing interest in my day) was enough to cause me conniption fits. When it came right down to it, life as a mother of young children didn’t translate well into a clean list of accomplishments I could proudly report to him. And often, there wasn’t something tangible that he could see. (You know, because the books had been emptied from the shelves for the tenth time that day right before he came home or something like that….) This was a difficult reality for me to adjust to. I met my husband when I was in my later 20s, so by that time, I had gotten pretty used to living my life by doing. I studied hard. I got good grades which helped me get scholarships. I graduated with a college degree, and then a Master’s degree. I had leadership positions in my graduate program.... Read the rest of this entry »

Pain and Peace

Posted by MormonWomen On August - 6 - 2010

-by Jenny I struggle with chronic health problems, including arthritis. One Sunday, I came home from church early, in pain and upset. It seems that when I’m in pain my mind gets involved, stirring and wrenching, agitated at dealing with something so overly consuming. I had been easing off of some pain medication that I had been taking; it wasn’t taking away the pain enough and was causing side effects that I didn’t want to deal with anymore. I had tapered off to no medication. It wasn’t my plan to dip my lower legs in acid but that’s what I ended up feeling had happened to me. So I sat in a pew fidgeting and fighting the pain until I could go home. When I arrived home it was sad to be in the house all alone and feeling horrid. Hoping I could sleep I took some ibuprofen and went to bed. Thankfully it worked and I slept for a while. When I awoke I laid there for a while, sorting myself out. Am I just stupid to stop taking a med that semi-worked, even with some... Read the rest of this entry »

The Book of Mormon: A life-changing book

Posted by Amanda D On July - 30 - 2010

By Amanda I read a blog post by a friend recently in which the author talked about the different books that have changed her life. My first thought was that I should do a post like that. I am, after all, a big reader. I love to read. I spend time reading everyday without fail. Certainly my list of life-changing books would be long. So, I sat down and started making a list. Much to my surprise, all I could come up with was: One. The Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon has been a spiritual guide for me.  It is a companion to the Holy Bible and has deepened my understanding of all scripture.  It is a testament of Jesus Christ, and I have gained a true testimony of Him in the pages of this book. I’ve learned about His prophets and His life. I’ve found answers to questions in its pages.  I’ve gained peace and comfort from it’s pages. When I’m reading it regularly, I am a better wife and mother. And that for me is life-changing. Add your profile to Mormon.org

Posted by Tim Malone On July - 21 - 2010

I haven’t been this excited about something the church has done in a long time.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love the blessings of being involved in church activity each week, especially as I watch the young single adults grow and develop (I serve in the Bishopric of a YSA ward).  But for me, this is probably the single most exciting development I have seen come from Salt Lake City in many years. I’m talking about the new Mormon.org, a complete redesign of the companion website to lds.org, the two main websites of the Mormon church.  Since I make a living with computers in IT support, I have been watching the church embrace and use technology for my entire adult life.  In the early nineties I wondered for a long time when the church would finally get a website.  When they did, it took me a while to not think that it was just a little bit behind the times even when it was new.  I felt the same way when Mormon.org first came out.  But with release 4.0 of the site,... Read the rest of this entry »

I have found this very interesting article about a “new generation of Mormons“. I quote a few passages from the article: (link to the full article: The rise of a new generation of Mormons) A New Generation of Mormons … the Mormon church is the outstanding religious success story of the past hundred years. Approximately 1.7 per cent of the US population are LDS members, just slightly fewer than describe themselves as Jewish. Global membership rose from 250,000 in 1900 to one million in 1948, to 13 million today. The church is probably the world’s richest per capita religious institution, too, with assets estimated at between $25bn and $30bn. (That’s £16bn-£20bn; the Church of England’s portfolio in 2009 was £4.4bn.) Religious sociologist Rodney Stark, at Baylor University in Texas, has predicted that the LDS will in the latter half of this century become the first new world religion since Islam – just one reason that Smith, who founded the church in the 1830s,... Read the rest of this entry »

Gratitude Prayers

Posted by MormonWomen On July - 6 - 2010

~by Erin As the secretary in the Primary {ages 3-11}, I attend Primary every Sunday. One Sunday the woman giving the lesson talked about how she started setting aside Sunday evenings to give a “thankful only” prayer. She said she watches for things throughout the day and makes a mental note of things to pray and give thanks for that night. She said it has really helped her be more thankful. I love this idea, and I decided to do it! I like the idea of not always asking for things from Heavenly Father, but to show him that we are thankful and don’t always expect something in return. - – – – – – - The most meaningful and spiritual prayers I have experienced contained many expressions of thanks and few, if any, requests. As I am blessed now to pray with apostles and prophets, I find among these modern-day leaders of the Savior’s Church the same characteristic that describes Captain Moroni in the Book of Mormon: these are men whose hearts... Read the rest of this entry »

Mormons believe that marriage and family are central to God’s plan for His children. As such, mothers play a critical role in this plan, as their primary role in the home is to nurture their children. Enjoy this new Mormon Messages video that includes powerful and encouraging words from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, an apostle of Jesus Christ. (The full text of his talk, “Because She is a Mother” can be found here.) El video de mensajes mormones: “La maternidad: Una asociación eterna con Dios” inluye un alentador tributo de un apóstol de Jesucristo a las madres que sacrificen y trabajan para criar a los hijos de Dios.  Read More →
