First Person: Home a Quiet Haven

Posted by Jen H. On March - 9 - 2010

~by Jen H. As a mother of five, involved with many many things, I am challenged to find privacy anywhere. Just the other day after a long and exhausting day, I laid in bed and pondered how impossible it was that throughout my day I had not had a single moment where I was not being touched, rubbed, tugged at, sung to, talked to, hollered at, cried at, complained to, questioned, argued with, negotiated with, laughed at (or with) and on and on. I realized how hungry I was for a little simplicity and quiet. I love (love love) being a mother, I love my children intensely and never wish my life was anything different than it is… However, as I have grown in to motherhood I have realized a weakness of mine that I wish to change.  I am by nature a very focused person. If I over-schedule and over-commit, the most important things in life unintentionally become subordinate to the less important things.  When I discipline myself and take the time to listen,  ponder and pray to my Heavenly... Read the rest of this entry »

What Bruce McConkie wrote in the past is not necessarily Mormon Doctrine, but this excerpt from his book, The Millennial Messiah: The Second Coming of the Son of Man ( p.30) is a  good explanation of when Mormons expect to be the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. ” Many scriptures attest that “the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.” (D&C 110:16.) In our revelations the Lord says, “The time is soon at hand that I shall come in a cloud with power and great glory” (D&C 34:7), and that “the great day of the Lord is nigh at hand. . . . For in mine own due time will I come upon the earth in judgment” (D&C 43:17, 29). Speaking of his coming, the Lord says in one revelation that it shall be “not many days hence” (D&C 88:87), and in another, that the wars to precede it are “not yet, but by and by” (D&C 63:35). These and like sayings fall into perspective when we hear him say:... Read the rest of this entry »

Criticizing Mr. Beck is a lot like shooting fish in a barrel, one could do it blindfolded, and likely intoxicated, but where’s the satisfaction?  But every once in a while (all too often for my taste) a new pearl of crazy pops out of the man’s mouth that just begs for commentary of one form or another.  Most recently, Mr. Beck has decided to provide us with his own particular spin on religion. In essence, according to the ever-incisive Beck, if one is a member of a church that seeks to promote “social justice” one ought to leave it immediately, for such churches are promoting either socialism or Nazism. Seriously, Glenn?  You’re now telling your listeners what church they should be a member of, based on your own warped political ideology?  And what of our own faith sir?  Yes, I refer to the religious identity that I reluctantly share with you, Brother Beck.  To be sure, “social justice” is not a value that is specifically addressed in Mormonism,... Read the rest of this entry »

~by Michelle Sometimes you hear stories of amazing miracles, and the video below is one of them. (And this is an amazing miracle, a blessing and answer to thousands of prayers. I’m moved by the gratitude of this Mormon family, recognizing God’s hand in their lives.) But what of the stories of sadness, tragedy, loss, and grief — also after as many prayers have been offered and faith exercised? Does God love someone less because He allowed loss to happen? Does having faith always mean that we will get the answers we want? Read a story of a tragic loss here –  and feel of the faith in this Mormon woman’s perspective, as she also recognizes God’s hand in her life and helps answer these questions. Both of these stories, each with a completely different outcome, testify of the same truths: God is there. He hears and answers prayers. He is very aware of our lives. Life has a purpose. And we testify that death is not the end. Even though sometimes the miracles... Read the rest of this entry »

There is a verse in the Doctrine and Covenants (one of the books of scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) which reads: “If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” This story, In Chile: The Lord’s Earthquake Warning, is a powerful example of how a group of missionaries was able to be prepared for the earthquake because of spiritual impressions that had come to the Mormon woman responsible (alongside her husband, the mission president) for 171 missionaries. (Couples are given responsibility to preside over 150-200 missionaries in 340 (as of Feb. 13, 2010) different geographical locations all over the world.) (For ideas on emergency preparedness, see the Church’s information here. Also, this website, compiled by two Mormon women, has a lot of helpful information.) Read about one missionary’s experience helping near the epicenter in Chile. Read about LDS relief efforts in Chile here. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve... Read the rest of this entry »

The Atonement through Jesus Christ

Posted by Timothy Berman On March - 2 - 2010

Easter is a month away and my thoughts are turning to one of the most sacred events in the history of humanity. While our culture and society today has created a more commercialized version of Easter as that of easter egg hunts, the easter bunny, and an excuse to munch on chocolate (as well as [...]  Read More →

March is coming around the corner. As always, the new edition of the Ensign is already in the mailboxes. I have already received mine, and have already glanced through some of the articles. There are several articles that are very interesting to read, prayerfully study through, and ask for comprehension. Truly, this month’s issue is [...]  Read More →

Acting Mormon

Posted by sistasinzion On February - 25 - 2010

A couple of years ago Kirby Heyborne , an LDS actor known for his work in LDS films such as The R.M, Singles Ward and The Best Two Years, did a beer commercial for Miller Lite. He received some backlash from the LDS community for appearing in the ad. Some called him a “sell out” others questioned his “personal ethics and faith.” In response to the scrutiny, Heyborne said this in an interview with Deseret News’ Mormon Times: “I’m a temple-worthy member that loves his wife and kids, and fulfills his calling at church and does his home teaching. And yet I’m going to play characters that might have moral dilemmas, or do a commercial — or whatever it is –because my job is the way that I provide for my family.” Heyborne also released this parody: Recently a group of 12 LDS women posed for the Hot Mormon Muffins: A Taste of Motherhood calendar. Though Chad Hardy, the calendars creator says that his calendar was “created as a vehicle to create dialog... Read the rest of this entry »

Can you be Modest and Cute?

Posted by Randall On February - 23 - 2010

Growing up I heard a lot of talk about how bad going strapless was. Being a male, I really didn’t think to much about it. However, I think about it a lot nowadays, with three daughters in my home. I have come to wonder what modesty really is. In a previous post I outlined what was [...]  Read More →

Book of Mormon Devotion: 1 Nephi 1:1

Posted by Timothy Berman On February - 22 - 2010

If you have never read the Book of Mormon, or if it has been a long while since you opened the pages, then you are not alone. My personal encounter with reacquainting myself with the Book of Mormon turned out to be one of the most positive and uplifting spiritual experiences ever had in my [...]  Read More →
