Why I am a Mormon – by Valerie

Posted by On July - 23 - 2011

Editor’s note: Yesterday, Valerie shared a little about her life and interests. Today, she shares about her faith, about why she chooses to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Valerie will be a regular contributor on Mormon Women, so look forward to more from her in the future. ~by Valerie J. Fulmer Why I am a Mormon I was raised a Mormon. My parents could not have given me a better gift. I have continued in the faith because it has blessed my life in numerous ways. To name a few: I have a happy marriage and a positive and close bond with our children. I have many opportunities to help and serve others which makes me feel I am making a positive difference in the lives of others. My family and I have received service and love from many members of the Church. I have met and made friends with many of these members. I have been enabled to overcome trials and come out stronger and wiser than before. I have felt the Love of God in my life in various... Read the rest of this entry »

~by Michelle I was looking over my husband’s shoulder as he and our son were looking at some news headlines a couple of days ago. “You’re reading about UFOs?” I asked, a bit puzzled. (That’s not exactly the usual fare of my boys.) My husband mentioned that the FBI had recently opened up a vault of files (apparently called the “X-files”) about alleged UFO sitings and the like. It made me think that since questions regarding Mormon belief about aliens quite regularly in our analytics, it was probably a good time to point people to a couple of articles here at Mormon Women addressing this question. Ask a Mormon Woman: Do Mormons believe in aliens? Ask a Mormon Woman: Do Mormons…? (part 1) (includes a question about if Latter-day Saints believe in aliens/extraterrestrials)  Read More →

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shares some thoughts in response to this question. In short, 1) we believe in Christ, 2) we share common values of Christlike living, 3) we love and use the Bible. Mormon Doctrine

Posted by On October - 26 - 2010

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called the Mormon Church, is not a Protestant church.  Its doctrines are not a reformation of orthodox Christianity.  Instead, it is the restoration of Christ‘s original Church, upon which orthodoxy is based.  It restores the organization, priesthood authority, and doctrines compromised by successive councils wherein the philosophies of men entered the traditional church. The Lord’s work upon the earth has been divided into dispensations.  Dispensations are time periods in which the Lord has at least one authorized servant on the earth who bears the holy priesthood and the keys, and who has a divine commission to dispense the gospel to the inhabitants of the earth. Each dispensation was led by a prophet, and many dispensations have been restorative after the people have lost their faith.  Adam was the first prophet and leader of the first dispensations.  Following dispensations... Read the rest of this entry »

Mormon Worship

Posted by On October - 26 - 2010

To understand what a Mormon temple is used for, it is necessary to understand Mormon worship.  The center of Mormon belief is the knowledge that Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of mankind.  His atonement is the most important event in history.  Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the first prophet of this modern dispensation, said the following: “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it.” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 49; see also Doctrine and Covenants 20:22–25.) Mormon congregations are arranged geographically; Latter-day Saints meet together according to where they live.  This means that a Mormon family does not choose a church to attend because they like the look... Read the rest of this entry »

Beautiful Mormon Temple Begun in Rome Italy

Posted by On October - 26 - 2010

Another monument to the beauty and holiness of the Lord, a Mormon temple– where worthy individuals are endowed or imbued with divine power and renewal through instruction and service–is underway in Rome, Italy. Many wonder what takes place in temples. Reading the Old Testament is enlightening in this regard and helps us see the consistent pattern of the Lord in desiring a sanctuary, a holy place, wherein His Spirit can most fully dwell and where His ordinances (symbolic rites like baptism and confirmation, for example, for those who have passed on without a knowledge of the gospel) can be performed. (See Mormon endowment, endowment Mormon.) View this video to capture a sense of the majesty and meaning and Spirit behind the building of Mormon temples–houses of the Lord Jesus Christ, who has restored His Church to the earth, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are absolutely amazing on so many levels. The Rome, Italy Mormon Temple will be no less so, and I’m personally thrilled about this beautiful divine development.  On a personal level, I feel as if I’ve grown up spiritually in so many ways as I have entered and served in the House of the Lord.  From the Washington DC Mormon temple to the Mount Timpanogos temple, from the Bountiful to Orlando Mormon temples, I have grown, served, and received quiet unmistakable revelation and left armed with greater clarity and power to live, as I’ve participated in the Lord’s service in those holy edifices. I’ve also grown up spiritually as I’ve received ordinances for myself (promise-making sets of instructions and beautiful rites) and then extended the same opportunities to loved ancestors by proxy in each House of the Lord. If you are curious about Mormon temples, we invite you to visit an upcoming open... Read the rest of this entry »

Mormon Temples

Posted by On September - 29 - 2010

Elder John A. Widtsoe made this remarkable statement: ‘ When the history of human thought shall be written from the point of view of temple worship, it may well be found that temples and the work done in them have been the dominating influence in shaping human thought from the beginning of the race. Even today, political controversies are as nothing in determining the temper of a people, as compared with religious sentiments and convictions, especially as practiced in the temples of the people. “I can’t. I’m Mormon.”

Posted by On September - 8 - 2010

~by Michelle I read an article* tonight by a young man who wears a couple of T-shirts at school that get people asking him about his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the T-shirts says: “I can’t. I’m Mormon.” He says: “The joke obviously comes from the strict guidelines of the Mormon faith, but the funny line underscores a deeper truth about the way Mormons are perceived.” It’s true that Mormons are often known by what we don’t do (or at least what we aren’t supposed to do): - Mormons don’t smoke, drink, or do drugs. (Our health code is called the Word of Wisdom.) - Mormons don’t engage in premarital or extramarital sex. (This is sometimes referred to as the law of chastity, and in spirit this law also includes not engaging in pornography or masturbation. See the entry on sexual purity for guidelines youth get on this topic.) - Mormons don’t shop (or do other typical ‘weekend’... Read the rest of this entry »
