The Lives of Faithful Mormons

Archive for the ‘modesty’ Category

Mormons believe that our bodies are gifts from God, a stewardship to care for. The standards we live by to respect our bodies include modesty and sexual morality. The following was written by “A Mormon Girl“ Recently, I sat in an interview to be a role model in my local community. They were looking for girls to represent the different towns, shopping centers and landmarks by doing community service. I sat in the interview just waiting to burst with enthusiasm. I am passionate about being a part of change in society. A lot of the world believes that the way young women portray themselves on television, magazines, and other media is a form of freedom of speech. A freedom to express themselves. Just another step towards empowerment. If we are really that much closer to empowerment, why are we using our bodies? Men have never used their bodies this much in this form. If we have become any more empowered is it in the form that we want to be empowered in? Are the young women... Read the rest of this entry »

General Relief Society Meeting

Posted by On August - 26 - 2010

I just ironed. Gasp!  I know!  Me?  Ironing?  Will wonders never cease? I hate to iron.  I think it stems back 12 years ago when I was putting the iron away on a shelf and it fell and landed on my pinky toe and broke it.  Ever since then, I have had a hate/hate relationship with the iron.  I don’t buy 100% cotton shirts.  #1, they shrink in the wash, even if you are careful.  And #2, they have to ironed.  So I just avoid them. But…(and here’s the really cool news, the whole reason why you are reading this post)… I get to sing in the choir for the General Relief Society Meeting in the Conference Center on September 25th!  I am so excited!  We have to wear a white, button up shirt for the choir.  So I had to go buy one.  Now, I know I am going to get a lot of you saying, “You could have borrowed one from me,” and my mom has already offered and I know I would fit in hers.  But I was thinking about it and... Read the rest of this entry »

Mormon Motherhood: Raising Daughters

Posted by On May - 21 - 2010

A young woman in my area recently tried to commit suicide after receiving over 3,500 negative texts from her peers. Her attempted suicide left her a paraplegic. Her plight, and others that have recently been highlighted in the national news, make me worried about the world my daughters are growing up in. When I listen to news reports like this my mind starts to ask a lot of questions. Will I let my girls have cell phones? Texting service? A Facebook account? Is Hannah Montana too sassy and too old of a show to let my eight-year-old watch? Is there anything decent on the radio these days? How can I raise daughters who value intelligence, virtue, and integrity more than the latest fashions or celebrities? Am I modeling the behaviors I value the most in women? One of my favorite quotes comes from Margaret Nadauld, a former President of the Young Women’s program from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. “The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are... Read the rest of this entry »

"Far above Rubies"

Posted by On April - 24 - 2010

Certain TV shows and previews reminded me of a quote from Sister Margaret Nagauld: “Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.” We need to be classy women–women with manners, discipline, integrity, virtue, sincerity, and charity. Sister Nagauld isn’t the only one to have said this: 1. “It is, unfortunately, all too easy to illustrate the confusion and distortion of womanhood in contemporary society. Immodest, immoral, intemperate women jam the airwaves, monopolize magazines, and slink across movie screens—all while being celebrated by the world.... Read the rest of this entry »

Temple Garments FAQ

Posted by On April - 18 - 2010

Washington D.C. Temple Thanks to my stat counter account, I have discovered that a popular search item is the temple garment. That is understandable since it is such a symbolic and sacred item in our Church and inspires much curiosity in the outside community. Therefore, I am going to address some frequently asked questions about temple garments. What are temple garments?Garments are white undershirts and underpants that many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wear. Who wears temple garments?Members of the Church who have attended the temple wear garments. In order to attend the temple, they must be at least 18 years old and have received a temple recommend (card), which is given after two interviews with local Church leaders to establish personal worthiness to enter the temple. Most men receive their garments at age 18 or 19, before going on their mission. Most women receive theirs whenever they get married or if they go on a mission at age 21 (though if... Read the rest of this entry »

Little Girls No More

Posted by On April - 14 - 2010

Read this article. And we wonder why girls as young as eleven are losing their virginity and why there are so many sexual predators out there. The company argues the padding is for modesty. On the one hand, that is understandable. My little sister went through puberty very early, and my mom had a hard time finding a little-girl bathing suit that covered my sister completely. On the other hand, if parents are so worried about modesty, why are they letting their little girls wear bikinis, especially if they are starting to blossom at a young age? Why can’t little girls just be little girls? They’ll have the rest of their lives to be grown women. Childhood lasts only for a brief moment. And once it’s over, most everyone wishes at some time or other that they could go back. I apologize this isn’t actually a doctrinal post. But this problem of sexualizing our little girls really bothers me. As members of the Church, we must set the example and dress our children modestly... Read the rest of this entry »

Can you be Modest and Cute?

Posted by On February - 23 - 2010

Growing up I heard a lot of talk about how bad going strapless was. Being a male, I really didn’t think to much about it. However, I think about it a lot nowadays, with three daughters in my home. I have come to wonder what modesty really is. In a previous post I outlined what [...]  Read More →

Nelly’s Not The Prophet!!

Posted by On October - 30 - 2009

Brothas and Sistas, Nelly is a rapper not the Prophet! When he wrote the song: IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE – SO TAKE OFF ALL YOUR CLOTHES, that was not a revelation and he was not taking to us. Really I should just say sistas cause the brothas are keeping their clothes on (even the pre and post mission clothes from 5 years ago… Shout out to brotha Stephen L , I kinda got your back, I said KINDA) . Now this is something that ya’ll won’t hear at General Conference. Why you ask, cause the General Relief Society President is more like Aunt Bea and less like Madea. However, there’s a few members of the church that are like **Madea and if you ever have the opportunity to meet them you will gain an immediate testimony of modesty, or want to leave the church. I know you’re wondering how I know all this, and if I’ve had the opportunity to meet such refreshingly honest women… Well, let’s just say I have a testimony of modesty! Yes, it was... Read the rest of this entry »

Spread the word: Modesty is dope

Posted by On January - 19 - 2009

One of the Savior’s transcendent teachings during the Sermon on the Mount was “… that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). He further revealed to Joseph Smith in 1831 that “… he that looketh upon a woman to lust after her shall deny the faith, and shall not have the Spirit; and if he repents not he shall be cast out” (D&C 42:23). Simply put, our “visual intake” significantly affects our thoughts and actions, and our temporal and eternal happiness is at stake. Keeping clean in this respect is hard enough with pornography a mouse click away and scantily clad women featured in most TV shows and commercials. But what is really destructive is how many women dress nowadays. And no, it’s not just poolside or at the gym that too little clothing is worn, but everywhere: at work, at school, at the park, at the store, and [... gulp] even at church. And even... Read the rest of this entry »
