US Daily News Posted 22 August 2011 by Candace E. Salima, Contributor, US Daily Review Apparently, because I don’t whine and cry and use my poverty stricken childhood as an excuse to be a failure in life, I am mistaken for a woman who has lived a charmed life, even born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Nothing could be farther from the truth, but I’m still not going to dwell on it. It does me no good, other than give me the impetus to live my life as my mother did. Although we had very little growing up, that was not the focus my mother chose to have. Instead, she taught us to read, write and speak proficiently before we ever entered kindergarten. Instead of focusing on how little food was on the table, my mother chose to fill the dinner table with laughter and love. And although she worked full-time, as did my biological father, she always took time to read to us every night, first from the James Herriott series, and then the scriptures.  Read the full article at US Daily... Read the rest of this entry »

you are always on my mind.

Posted by On August - 11 - 2011

image via Pinterest Well not ‘you’ meaning anyone in particular. I just mean to say that there has been a lot on my mind of late.  One of Justin’s younger cousins passed away this week. He has been sick, and in pain for a long time, so in many ways it is nice to know that he doesn’t have to deal with that pain anymore, but it isn’t always as easy for the people left behind. I haven’t known Andrew for very long, but he was one of the purest, sweetest persons I have ever had the opportunity to meet. To know him was to love him, and have him love you. People like Andrew are so special.  It is beautiful and amazing to me how the passing of a person always seems to produce a reevaluation of ones life, and how that life is lived. It forces people to take a much needed stop from the mundane and endless progression of the day to day and think about someone who has impacted their life, and the things that are really important.  In many ways, life never... Read the rest of this entry »

What matters most?

I passed a billboard with Jennifer Aniston, her long, tan legs stretch across the board. Next to that cottage-chesseless, tan, sculptued thigh, is a bottle of Smart Water.  I wanted that water.  No, I wanted that thigh.  But it was probably photo shopped and air-brushed, right? Right? And then I got to thinking, how can water be smart?  And if there is smart water, I’ve probably been drinking dumb water.  And then I had an epiphany: Nobody cares about my legs.  You never think about my legs, do you?  And if you saw me in a swimsuit you wouldn’t lay awake at night thinking about it. Would you? Why do I obsess about these things?  Stretch marks on thighs, which I started getting during my third pregnancy, are like those mother pins my son fastens to my shirt at pack meeting only they are permanent and don’t get lost in the washing machine.  The scar where... Read the rest of this entry »

If I Had More Time

Posted by On June - 25 - 2011

The other night, I was feeling in my being if I had more time, I could get more sleep and then I could wake up and exercise and have more energy. If I had more time, I could get the garden in. I could clear out the garage, I could clean up the basement. If I had more time, I could write on the blog, I could write my brother, I could finish reading these books. As I was feeling this, the  Read More →

honey, I’m home!

Posted by On June - 20 - 2011

Well guys, its 2 in the morning, I’m writing a post and watching a silly show, so I suppose that means we are home and back in action! My house is in pretty much a sweet mess, I’ve had an uncontrollable craving for caramel corn all day, Trev and Sarah are all moved into the dorms and ready to start school tomorrow, puppies are so excited to have us back, and life is good.  Texas was great! My sisters are still as silly as ever, which makes my heart so so happy. The day the giggles die would be the saddest day in the world. I found out that its very very hard to blog while on vacation and with my family, but I’ve decided that everyone should unplug every now and then. I think Justin and I become a little too invested and reliant on our gadgets and knick knacks, so a break was very refreshing! Now for some delicious little finds that we encountered on our drive home. Enjoy! You know you are in Texas when… Isn’t he a freaking sexy beast?... Read the rest of this entry »

Life is short.  Especially for some.  My mom died at 61, barely.  If I live to be as old as my mom, I’ve got 15 years left.  I’ve lived in my current house for 15 years, and I just got here.  I don’t even think I’ve fully unpacked.  Fifteen years is a blink unless you are in prison or in pain.  Fifteen years ago was yesterday only I didn’t have as many wrinkles and I was smarter or at least I thought I was.  Fifteen years into the future is tomorrow.  What have I done?  I’ve thought about writing books, I’ve thought about making scrapbooks for my kids, I’ve thought about getting organized I’ve thought about getting in shape, I’ve thought about what I want to be when I grow up, At this rate, what I be when I grow up will be dead. I’ve thought about doing something meaningful with my life, leaving some kind of mark besides Hershey Kisses wrappers and a pile of clothes that need... Read the rest of this entry »

I am thrilled that Tim and I will be interviewing NYT best-selling author, Steve Berry on our Buy Back America radio show on June 7th. I adored his latest book: The Jefferson Key. It was a page-turner that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. It’s a must-read and I recommend it to one and all!  I found a wonderful article on Steve Berry, where he talks about turning failure into success. I really wanted to share with my fellow bloggers. It is good. So I’m stepping away from politics for the moment, and delving back into the world of literacy which is my first love. As published on Evergreen Park Patch: New York Times Best Selling Author Steve Berry speaks candidly about perseverance and his long awaited road to success at the Evergreen Park Public Library Thursday night. By Amanda Edwards If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again; famous words that accurately describe American novelist, Steve Berry and his award-winning writing career. This New York... Read the rest of this entry »

The Case of the Missing Blog Posts

That’s odd. I published two blog posts this week, and they are currently nowhere to be seen. Anybody see either of them this week before they disappeared? The curse of Friday the 13th strikes again!  Read More →

How do you put off buying something you really want but is not a need? I’ve been having a really lively game of fighting temptations to paint rooms, buy bedroom furniture, and add home decor accessories. I also want an army of hostas for the north side of the house and new shrubs for the flower bed in the front yard. The backyard keeps whispering to me to put in some flagstone and moss. I want  Read More →
