Let the new week begin

Posted by On April - 12 - 2011

Monday has already passed and it was the last day of my wife‘s vacation. The past week she had been home from work to spend time with her son and our daughter. This coincided with my stepson being out of school for spring break. Because of this, many of my own projects, writing, and schoolwork [...]  Read More →

Conference and Learning at Home

Posted by On March - 31 - 2011

I love conference weekend, and it’s not just that I get to attend church from my La-Z-Boy recliner in the family room. (We’ve come a long way from getting just one session, time-delayed, over the local PBS station!) Since my time in the MTC (before it was the MTC, in fact), I’ve really tried to participate in as many sessions as possible. Because I’ve never lived in Salt Lake City, that participation has always included some electronic connection, and I’m grateful for ever-increasing improvements in that regard. I was reading a talk that David Bednar gave while he was president of BYU-I (“Teach Them To Understand”, BYU-I Education Week, June 4, 1998) , and he caused me to reflect on 3 Nephi 17:1-3: Behold, now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked round about again on the multitude, and he said unto them: Behold, my time is a t hand. I perceive that ye are weak, that ye cannot understand all my words which I am commanded of the Father to speak... Read the rest of this entry »

Two rooms finally organized

Posted by On February - 4 - 2011

This past week was focused on getting the house organized, cleaned up, and not looking like a cluttered home. The first room I had to tackle was that of my step-son’s room. Since he had refused to clean things up and get it organized (we moved into the home the last weekend of October of [...]  Read More →

This is the number of houses I have lived in since I have been married.  7 houses in 18 years.  1. When we first got married, we were supposed to move into a brand new apartment building.  But they weren’t finished yet.  So we moved into a temporary apartment. 2. We were concerned about how much the rent was going to be on the new apartment ($400) so we were able to get into a mobile home on campus for much less ($250, including utilities). 3. 4 months later, we changed schools and cities. 4. 3 months later, we were sick of the cigarette smoke smell in our non-smoking apartment, so we moved, losing our security deposit.  We had now been married 6 months. We lived in this apartment for 3 years, almost to the day.  5. We moved to another apartment…3 blocks away. This duplex had it’s own fenced back yard, which was so nice.  I could send the kids out to play and not have to be there with them.  And it was only 3 houses away from my mom. We lived... Read the rest of this entry »

This is the number of times I moved before I was married.  The first question people ask me is if my family was in the military.  Nope.  My dad was an entrepreneur and really wanted to own his own business.  There were many problems, through no fault of his own, and the businesses just didn’t work out. The hardest move, but the best one for me, was in the middle of my junior year.  I had a boyfriend and did not want to move.  But in hindsight, it was probably a good thing because we were way too close.  Which would have led to not good things.  Heavenly Father knows what He is doing.  Read More →

Time at home…

Posted by On October - 18 - 2010

(Photo taken by my sister-in-law, Katherine, at my parent’s 28 acre home site…my “childhood home”) “A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul.” -Phillip Moffitt We have been having a good ‘ole time during our stay here at my parent’s place. It’s been good for my soul to have this time to spend at my childhood home. Since the Hubby, son and I now live 10 hours away from here…we don’t get to come back to visit as often as I would like. Yet, when we do, I am reminded of so many tender memories that were created here. No matter how far I travel or how long I have lived away from this home…it always feels like home-sweet-home when I come back. Here is just a small sampling of the memories that flood my mind when I come home to see my parents : Climbing the chestnut tree in the front pasture with my brothers and all of us getting these massive thorns that punctured our feet–seriously they went... Read the rest of this entry »

Domesticity–It’s Not All About Me

Posted by On September - 23 - 2010

Domesticity: n. 1. The quality or condition of being domestic. 2. Home life or devotion to it. Years ago my daughter attended a teen girl conference with the theme All About Me.  My husband and I mock those words whenever she wears the T-shirt. She hates it when we do that. But the phrase cries, [...] All Content Copyright (C) 2007-2009 TJ Hirst. Sparks

Posted by On August - 17 - 2010

A couple of weeks ago, in a house on the street behind us, the family was cooking dinner.  They had chicken out on the grill on their patio.  They went inside to check on something, and when they came back out, there were flames shooting from their propane tank to their house.  They quickly got everyone out of the house and made sure they were safe.  The fire department came and put out the fire, but they will be out of their house for 4 months while they get a whole new roof, new carpet, and wall board (from the water).  In a matter of minutes their lives changed drastically. I came way too close to that 15 minutes ago.  I was blow drying my hair when my dryer stopped for a few seconds then started going again.  I thought the power had flickered.  It did it again and I pulled it away from hair to look at it.  And then it sparked.  From the base of the blow dryer, a huge orange spark shot out and I heard it sizzle.  Now, if I had... Read the rest of this entry »
