I discovered maybe a real life “lifesaver” a Blentec Those of you who know me, maybe not even well, know that I do not like fruit. I never have. I refused to eat it when I was little, etc. etc… Before this bad boy- I might have been the most unhealthy person you know. How I am not 500 lbs is beyond me. My diet consisted of a few basic things… ice cream, candy, peanut butter, bread, and noodles. It is a huge joke in my family that I am on the “white diet.” And my brothers say that my anti-fruit attitude has now become an identity and a way to get attention. B.S. It is never fun to be at a shower, in your honor, and literally play with your food… Shower food is my least favorite- its always like very very small appetizers. Rolls and salad. And then treats in abundance or fruit platters… It’s my struggle. Luckily, I have this great friend, who acts as an assistant and we sort of switch off with the fruits, for example I’ll get... Getting Your Child To Eat Vegetables: A Green Smoothie
It was the advice that only a best friend could give. I was desperate. My 2 year-old hadn’t so much as touched a vegetable in weeks and was starting to turn her nose up at fruits too. “My kids are not much better,” my friend said. “But most mornings I can get them to drink a Green Smoothie.” I then spent the next 20 minutes asking question after question about these magical Green Smoothies. With each answer she gave my heart filled with hope. My friend blended 3 ingredients for her smoothies; ice, bananas and fresh spinach leaves. I was worried that my kids would taste the spinach and refuse the smoothie, but she assured me that the banana would cover the taste of the spinach. It was only a matter of hours before I handed a small plastic cup full of Green Smoothie to my 2 year old. She was excited about the novelty of using a straw and I held my breath in anticipation. ... Hello there my old friend
This past week has been one of those weeks where I simply wanted to curl up in a corner and disappear. Not exactly sure why I felt the way I felt, but those old feelings were haunting me like an episode of Ghost Whisperer. For the moment, it did not seem like I could do [...] Read More →
Marysville Parenting Examiner
At one time I had a dream that some day I will be at home and writing full time. This vision centered around being a successfully published author of fiction. However, there is a different realization to this dream. Yes, I am at home and raising a wonderful and most adventurous daughter, I am also focused on [...] Read More →
Grocery Shopping & Preparing Food
Basic skills for living is something that all of us need. I have a friend and colleague, Carly Ducheminsky, who recently became a part of a organization that helps provide online resources for basic skills to live, particularly in healthy food choices and financial management. Such skills influence our abilities to provide to our children and to ourselves. She was recently on TV talking about how smart grocery shopping leads to the ability to serve healthy meals to the family. Remember these simple tips: Look at the flyres Make a list before grocery shopping Shop for the freshest foods Take time to prepare Involve the children when possible For more information, check out basicskillsforliving.ca Written by: Josh Lockhart …..is Locking Hearts Together http://www.lockingheartstogether.blogspot.com/ ***************************************************** Enjoy what you just read? LDS Activity Days Girls Teach About the Word of Wisdom
One of my callings in the Church is to help with Activity Days for girls who are 10 and 11 years old. At Activity Days, our group is focusing on the Faith in God program. We as leaders (there are two of us) work with the girls to plan activities that correspond with different facets of the Faith in God program, including Learning and Living the Gospel, Serving Others, and Developing Talents. Last week, we focused on the following activity option: Read D&C 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others. We decided to use the internet to share more about the Word of Wisdom with others. We worked together around my kitchen table to create a presentation on Google docs. So, what is the Word of Wisdom? I’ll let the girls answer that question. (They liked using the acronym W.O.W. so we helped them frame a subtitle around that.) Mormon Primary Children “WOW”... Read the rest of this entry »
I’m Afraid You’re Crazy because I Don’t Know What’s Going On
Great news for those who are troubled by gluten but don’t have celiac disease: recent research shows that there actually is such a thing as gluten sensitivity, a condition that has, until now, largely avoided detection and description by the science and medical communities. Apparently, until now, doctors have simply had to diagnose their patients as being “crazy” if the patients reported having problems with gluten but tested negative for celiac disease. Cynthia Kupper, executive director of the nonprofit Gluten Intolerance Group of North America, was recently interviewed by the Wall Street Journal. “Patients have been told if it wasn’t celiac disease, it wasn’t anything. It was all in their heads,” she says, “There’s a lot more that needs to be done for people with gluten sensitivity, but at least we now recognize that it’s real and that these people aren’t crazy.” My question is this: is it routine procedure for... Utah House Bill 0133 Must Be Defeated
Utah H.B. 133 EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION AMENDMENTS Chief Sponsor: John Dougall Senate Sponsor: None so far. This bill must be defeated before it ever gets anywhere. I am vehemently opposed to it because of the shortsightedness of it. If you are healthy, then this policy is fine. If you have ANY illness or accident which might require you to have more than 3 weeks off you are screwed. My husband is a renal failure patient. With his upcoming transplant he will need 6 weeks of time off. Without the saved up sick leave, which exceeds Dougall’s proposed maximum, Alvin will lose his insurance. The transplant costs $250,000 and the meds $3,000/mo (rounded up.) The first day he is no longer covered by sick leave, as mentioned, he will lose his insurance and his job, because they will no longer be required to hold it. Dougall has effective signed a death sentence for my husband. Does he really think I am going to let this go unchecked? Why did he not fully and completely research the far-reaching... Tips To Keep Your Child From Getting Sick
As we are in the midst of the cold and flu season, sickness is all around us. This time of the year is common for sickness and so we must take extra precautions to try to keep our children and families from getting sick. The following are some tips to help prevent your child from getting sick: Have your child wash their hands often Have your child use hand sanitizer Make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing for the weather–heavy, warm coats etc. in these winter months Discourage your child from sharing food or drinks with other children–germs are easily spread through the sharing of these kinds of things Make sure your child covers his/her mouth when they cough Do not let your child go to a friend’s house if you know the friend or some member of that family is sick or is just getting over being sick Keep your home clean and sanitary Give your child some sort of supplemental vitamin C either in the form of chewable tablets, gummy bears, etc–this will... About Trying To Serve God And Mammon Or the Gospel of Wealth
Part religious pondering, part political polemic, this is an indictment of the Gospel of Wealth. Not party politics, though! But if you are interested, I take a bit crusty look at the culture that insinuates that if you’re poor or sick, it’s because you’ve earned it (see Mosiah 4:16-23). Read More →
