I was born two weeks early. Back in the 1970s, before many of the modern technologies hospitals have now to help premies, that was a big deal. My mother told me I came out so fast, the doctor barely had time to get his gloves on to catch me. It was determined that something was wrong with me and so tests were performed and it came as no surprise that my parents, especially my mother, were worried. My father immediately called my grandpa to come and help him give me a priesthood blessing. When they arrived at the hospitals nursery where I was, the nurses wouldn’t allow my grandpa and father inside for safety reasons regarding the other babies there. But they did permit them to take me out into the hall, just outside of the nursery. My grandpa said I was so small, he could hold me in the palm of his hand. So in that cold, empty hospital hallway, with the priesthood they held, my father and grandfather gave me a blessing of healing. The next morning, when all the test... Read the rest of this entry »

Consecrated Oil of Anointing
Although I am not invited to attend the Priesthood session of General Conference, I make sure the first talks I view on-line after Conference is over are those I missed. Hence, this week I took some time to study the talk given by Dallin H. Oaks called, Healing the Sick. In his talk, Elder Oaks spoke about three different modes, or ways, a person could use the powers of healing in their lives. These are: 1) Medical Science 2) Prayers of Faith 3) Priesthood Blessings He stated, “The use of medical science is not at odds with our prayers of faith and our reliance on priesthood blessings.” I believe that this statement could also be applied more broadly to be viewed with the understanding that science and religion are not at odds either, regardless of what some may think. He continued, “Latter-day Saints believe in applying the best available scientific knowledge and techniques. We use nutrition, exercise, and other practices to preserve health, and we enlist the help of healing... Read the rest of this entry »
Dr. Gardner–Grandma’s Chicken Soup Cure
There’s a really nasty virus going around at the moment, one that drops a quadruple whammy of fever, headache, sore throat, and cough. I know because I’ve had it and it’s been slow to go. So I thought today would be a good time to post another gem from Dr.Stan Gardner. Just thinking about this soup makes me feel good Chicken Soup–Food for Body and Soul “Put a chicken in a pot with water, onions, carrots, peppercorns, and a little salt. Cook until it falls apart. Strain. Discard fat. Feed the overdone chicken and vegetables to a hungry pet. Add a whole chili pepper to the broth, half a large garlic clove, and thin slices of lemon. Serve streaming hot. This is the cure for the common cold. “Research done at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida in 1978 showed that this hot broth eased congestion and runny nose more than hot or cold water did for people with colds. Although there are theories, no one is sure why chicken broth is so successful.... Read the rest of this entry »
Healing from Depression Through Jesus Christ
Today, I’m posting another outstanding YouTube video from Seth Adam Smith. Depression is a topic that concerns many people of all faiths, in all parts of today’s world. Carrie Wrigley is a powerful speaker. The quote below comes from Seth. “The Lord hath anointed me…to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives…to comfort all that mourn…to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…” (Isaiah 61:1-3) In a world filled with differing—and oftentimes, conflicting—philosophies on depression, low self-worth and mental health, Carrie M. Wrigley, LCSW, offers profound, gospel-centered counsel on healing through Jesus Christ and the power of His Atonement. Citing examples from the scriptures and quotes from modern-day apostles and prophets, Carrie Wrigley highlights the hope for “them that sit in darkness” (Isaiah 42:7)... Read the rest of this entry »
Questions on Healing
In the chapters of scripture that catalog spiritual gifts, healing is among them. Paul and Moroni refer to the “gifts of healing” (1 Corinthians 12:9; Moroni 10:11). Section 46 of the Doctrine & Covenants indicates that some have the gift of faith to be healed and others have the gift to heal (vv. 19-20). Indeed, as a people we Mormons do believe in miracles. Many of us have seen them in our own lives – physical, take-up-thy-bed-and-walk miracles. We seek them, usually through priesthood blessings in which we ask holders of the priesthood to anoint us with consecrated oil and bless us with health. Sometimes (but not always) these blessings result in miraculous healings. Of course the Savior established the pattern of miraculous healing, often reminding the beneficiaries that their faith had made them whole. And sometimes a person did not need direct contact with the Savior: touching his robe was enough for the woman with the issue of blood. And in the case... Read the rest of this entry »

GIVE-AWAY – Torn Apart by Diony George
This week’s give-away, a copy of a new and heart-wrenching novel, Torn Apart, comes from the book’s author Diony George. Diony George, wife and mother of seven, addresses a very important topic as an LDS writer in her first fiction novel, Torn Apart, based on a true story. Religious beliefs and practices do not make one immune to worldly influences and her book addresses in a compelling way the devastating effects pornography is having on marriages and families today. Torn Apart has received positive feedback from readers and publishers alike because the issue is relevant, and real. Diony currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband Daryl, and their children. From the back cover: Alyson thinks her life is perfect. Hectic and tiring, of course, but no more so than any other wife and mother of four boys. But with her husband becoming increasingly distant, Alyson wonders if there’s something she’s doing wrong. Little does she know that the actions of someone... Read the rest of this entry »

I’m eight doses closer to happiness with this little green pill. That’s my ultra high dose of Vitamin D to combat the severe deficiency I’ve contracted living for ten years in this seems-to-be-winter-all-year state of Minnesota. So far this month, which is usually the hardest, I’ve kept the winter blues at bay, and it’s my [...] All Content Copyright (C) 2007-2009 TJ Hirst.
