I just came back from a briefing by Marianne Viray, who was an intelligent, vibrant BYU alum that did well as she spoke to us about the difficulties of the new campaign finance reforms the Supreme Court decided this past week. At one point she threw out a question asking which was better, transparency of donations or freedom of speech, and I charged forward saying, “I see this whole issue riddled with political cartoons waiting to be drawn. I see candidates wearing suits with giant Nike swooshes running for government in the future. Just like Apple with the Prop 8 discussion, they came out and openly supported gay marriages. So whether there is transparency or not, whomever has the most money will be pushing the candidates agendas into office.“ Content, I sat back and realized my own incompetence. My response to her question was 1) completely obvious and 2) COMPLETELY unrelated to what she really asked! I neither answered about the first amendment nor transparency. I disrespected... Reaching divine potential in D.C.
Ray's Hell Burger with friends We’ve got: THE WHITE HOUSE!! Yessir! In all it’s East Wing, 6 room self-guided tour glory! Who am I kidding, on just one wall there was enough money in paintings that I could retire! I really enjoyed it! Thanks Adrienne for hooking us all up! Air and Space Museum! Made it back, and basked in the glory that is my dream job! I have never wanted to switch majors back to Mechanical Engineering more than as I checked out the Space and Beyond exhibit! (I really wanted (want) to be an astronaut my freshman year.) National Archives! I got to see the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and Magna Charta! Talk about history lesson in diplomacy! LOVED it! As for food I made my way over to the very famous Georgetown Cupcakes! The epitome of the cupcake craze hitting the U.S. right now. Pretty darn good! I aint complainin’ ’bout the company neither! Ray’s Hell Burger (get it?) is a burger joint in VA that has... Read the rest of this entry »
The DC . . . no, not Divine Comedy
Wow! How can I possibly convey everything that is my life right now!? I LOVE DC!! Sight seeing: Capitol Building Tour – Got a behind the scenes personal tour with an intern working for Senator Reid! SO ornate! Kennedy Center for Fine Arts – Has anybody seen State of Play? Either way, you have to come here someday. They have a free show in their side, grand hallway theater every single day of the year. We got to hear some creole music, which was awesome! Botanical Gardens – Loved it. Tons of cute kids hanging out there too. Library of Congress – Oh my gosh. O.M.G.! I might have liked this more than the capitol. We’re going back to get a library card so we can read in the main room and feel like we somehow are going to find a national treasure. Smithsonian – Air and Space Museum – Only saw maybe a fourth of it. Loved everything in it. Got to see the first civilian-made and run ship to take a civilian into space. SpaceShipOne. Which, in my excitement... Read the rest of this entry »
A letter to the apartment across the street
This post is dedicated to the apartment of girls across the street. I have only gotten to know you in the past couple months. But, you have all taught me so much about the blessings of being united, pure, and showing me how a group of true friends act. I think there are a lot of lessons to learn from your example, and I hope to write them out and add some of my own words. The greatest lessons I have learned from your apartment are those from unity. You are so united as an apartment. That really is a blessing to have. Mosiah 18:21 “And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another.” I’ve watched you all work together through this past semester. As I’ve stopped by and seen you interact with each other I have seen the love and support you unquestionably give to one another. That love has... Read the rest of this entry »
A bedtime video for you
I absolutely LOVE this video. Everything about it. The photography, the astronomy, the mountains, the Beethoven, the serenity is all perfect. If I could somehow take the feeling I get from this video and make it permanent in my life I would feel like I was living with the kind of peace God wants me to have. Watch these, go straight to your bed and relish in the peace it appeals to. And just as amazing is the first part with just as much Beethoven: I’m a sucker for art and the emotions it evokes.. and this almost makes me want to cry from humility and beauty. Update (Dec. 7): I can’t tell you how much I love these videos! I just keep watching them! I’ve watched them at least once almost every day since I found them. Sometimes I’ll end up watching them 3 or 4 times a day! I LOVE them! I even wrote the photographer and thanked him for his work, and he was kind enough to write back! This art just makes me want to shout to the world, “Look! And deny not the... Read the rest of this entry »
