Do you ever have those days when everything you do seems to go wrong? Well, for me, the past several months have seemed to be like that, especially the last couple of days (including today) Seriously, I think that I am one of the most accident-prone people alive. I just seem to attract trouble in everything that I try to say, accomplish, and try. Just as an example, I was with some friends last night and we were all trying to walk across this tightrope strap that was strung between two trees. I tried a couple of times in turn with everyone else and my balance skills were evidently lacking, which I have always known were minimal in my life and seemingly worse since my health concerns during my mission in the Ivory Coast (for more about that experience see My Exodus from the Ivory Coast). Well, the third time I tried to walk across this rope was definitely the charm as the saying goes but it was not in the positive way. I hopped up on the one end... Read the rest of this entry »

You Can Focus on Poverty or You Can Focus on Life
US Daily News Posted 22 August 2011 by Candace E. Salima, Contributor, US Daily Review Apparently, because I don’t whine and cry and use my poverty stricken childhood as an excuse to be a failure in life, I am mistaken for a woman who has lived a charmed life, even born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Nothing could be farther from the truth, but I’m still not going to dwell on it. It does me no good, other than give me the impetus to live my life as my mother did. Although we had very little growing up, that was not the focus my mother chose to have. Instead, she taught us to read, write and speak proficiently before we ever entered kindergarten. Instead of focusing on how little food was on the table, my mother chose to fill the dinner table with laughter and love. And although she worked full-time, as did my biological father, she always took time to read to us every night, first from the James Herriott series, and then the scriptures. Monday Musings: Traffic trouble.
My husband and I don’t often get a date night. We had dinner, visited an aunt, attended the temple, and it was very late when we started the hour drive home. There was horrendous traffic and we wanted to get out of it and back to our little town as soon as possible. We took the beltway, and found ourselves in a parking lot almost immediately. Me: “Aw, man. Sorry about that, I thought this Read More →

Please Pray for my Wife
While I was talking with one of my business contacts the other day at the YMCA, I told her we were due to have a baby this week. She told me she would put my wife on the prayer chain in her local congregation and I was very grateful for the offer. My wife is scheduled to be induced this Wednesday. For all of you who read this blog, please keep her in your prayers. Pray the delivery will go well, the doctors will be inspired, and that I will be inspired as well to support her. I feel the more “prayer chains” we have out there, the better. Her name is Becca. Thanks again for all your faith and prayers and also for your thoughts of faith you share regularly on this blog. I’ll let you know how everything goes with the delivery. Read More →
I Don’t Wanna!
Mormon families take turns cleaning their churches. Warning: Self-disclosure today and it’s not flattering. Have you ever been sorry you answered the phone? I got one of those calls Friday night, one I wasn’t in the mood for. It wasn’t the worst one I’ve ever answered, but it was a good thing the person on the other end couldn’t see my face. “We signed up for church clean-up tomorrow morning and we can’t make it. Will you take our place?” Tell me honestly how welcome that phone call would be, especially with the short notice? No surge of benevolence went coursing through my veins right at that instant. However, I hid my truer, mortal feelings. “Sure..um..ok” Trust me, asking people to sub for you at the last minute for church cleaning is not an effective way to endear yourself to anyone. I wanted to say no. My house is behind, my life is behind. We just sent off Chinese students who had... Read the rest of this entry »
my little brouhaha 2011-08-14 00:57:00
I spent yesterday basically disconnected from the ether of internets and phones. Spent most of the day up in the mountains without reception or wifi. Nice change of pace, but I had a gazillion emails and whatnot to catch up on today. Picture time! We meandered around Hollywood Boulevard. Chinese Theater. Star walk. Handprints. Kodak Theater. Wax Museum. The whole enchilada. (hello el capitan Read More →
