In various work environments have established safety policies and procedures. In my former place of employment, an employee had to be cognizant of his/her surrounding areas. The Hidden and Underlying Message

Posted by On January - 12 - 2011

Introduction Westboro Baptist Church is at the center of another controversy. This time, it is over the tragic shooting that occurred in Tucson, Arizona. Why the notoriety of this particular group of people? They have been known to picket funerals – including Gordon B. Hinckley’s funeral. Many people are up in arms over the tactics and methodology [...]  Read More →

There are certain things one takes for granted in life: The sun rising in the east, autumn following summer, the Chicago Cubs failing to get into the World Series for yet another season…  I used to think that those universal truths included “When your house is on fire, dial 911 and the firemen will come and put it out.”  It seems however that such is not the case in various parts of our country, most notably in Obion County, Tennessee.  That is where last week the sad case of Mr. Gene Cranick and his family was brought to our collective attention.  Mr. Cranick’s home caught fire last week and he, like anyone with some sense between his ears did the logical thing, he called 911 and pled for help from the local authorities.  At this point this story veers away from the familiar, yet always gratitude-inspiring, narrative of the heroism of our first responders and into dystopian peculiarity. Mr. Cranick and his family live in rural Obion County, and there is no county fire... Read the rest of this entry »

The other day, I happened to post on Mormon Apologetics Discussion Board a brief and quick topic on the parallelism that exists between some of those on the Liberal side of politic’s and those who are critic’s of the Mormon faith. In full context, here is the original posting. Recently, I started listening to AM [...]  Read More →

Here are some random things I’ve thought of over the past few weeks: Sometimes we need to realign our guiding posts. And this is a great, refreshing way to remember how we are to live! I want to write a post about true politics. I’ve been working on my opinion on the way people view politics... Read the rest of this entry »

The Atonement through Jesus Christ

Easter is a month away and my thoughts are turning to one of the most sacred events in the history of humanity. While our culture and society today has created a more commercialized version of Easter as that of easter egg hunts, the easter bunny, and an excuse to munch on chocolate (as well as [...]  Read More →

Edenic Ethics and the Triumph of Teleology

Posted by On February - 18 - 2010

Stories from the lives of Thomas More, Nephi, and Adam all suggest a specific ethical approach: deontology as a first line of defense, then shift to teleology when one’s deontology is challenged. Deontology (“Do your duty, that is best- leave unto the Lord the rest) Teleology (rightness of a choice is measured by its consequences) [Deontological (duty-based) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deontological_ethics Teleological (ends-based) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleological_ethics] I cite three stories to illustrate. First: Nephi was exceptionally deontological (specifically, he adhered to the species of deontology known as “divine command theory” e.g. 1 Nephi 3:7 I will go and do, returned to get the plates, built the boat, kept the record without knowing why [1 N 9:5], etc.). However, when God commanded him to slay Laban, instead of performing his deontological duty, he hesitated. Only the angel’s teleological argument persuaded him (see my post... Read the rest of this entry »
