Just Finished Reading

Posted by On April - 13 - 2011

It sent sheer joy straight to my heart and hit with the impact of William Tell’s arrows. Just finished reading the Doctrine & Covenants today. It has been one of the sweetest, most endearing scripture reads I have ever had. And that’s coming from someone who LOVES The Book of Mormon. I decided to start out on the New Testament back in January, because I had just finished the Old Testament, and the NT was the next Sunday School course for 2011. The New Testament was the straightforward and logical choice. But the impression came over and over that the D&C was next. Very strong impressions. So glad I did. I cried through probably a third of the Doctrine & Covenants because the lessons were timely and coincided with other significant events. And such a strong experience hasn’t happened when reading this book in the past. Reading it this time, sent sheer joy straight to my heart and hit with the impact of William Tell’s arrows. The Doctrine &... Read the rest of this entry »

In an effort to picture in our mind exactly what Lehi might have been shown in the “Tree of Life Vision” we have a tendency to limit our perspective to the physical items that he describes he saw. For example he saw a large and spacious field (vs. 9 & 20), a tree with fruit (vs. 10-11), a river of water (vs. 13), a rod of iron (vs. 14), a strait and narrow path (vs. 20), a fountain (vs. 20), and a great and spacious building (vs. 26).  Many artists have given their interpretation or rendition of this scene in various types of mediums.   Each is only an opinion drawn by what they read in Nephi’s account.  Looking beyond the items in the vision, I would like to concentrate on the groups of people that Nephi remembers being told about.  In an effort to compartmentalize the groups of people that are spoken of in Lehi’s Dream I have made a comparison of Lehi’s Vision with the Vision which was recorded in Section 76 of the Doctrine and Covenants. ... Read the rest of this entry »

Why so many different religions?

Posted by On January - 1 - 2011

We cannot decide on our own what the Lord is thinking or what he desires of us.  When left to ourselves we scatter in so many different directions, like sheep without a shepherd.  If there is anything the Bible teaches, it is that the Lord does have a singular and specific mind.  We are always in great need of a prophet, some one to guide us among so many opinions and interpretations We’ve gone from one official state religion established in the Old Testament in ancient times with a single anointed prophet to hundreds of variations of Christ’s original church from the New Testament as well as numerous self-proclaimed religious leaders in modern times. Christian Religion has also become a convenient, watered-down thing for many in the world.  In fact, so many times it appears casual at best.  There are also different sects and creeds militantly centered on one passage of scripture, selectively ignoring other scriptures and doctrines.  And today... Read the rest of this entry »

The Fulness of the Gospel

Posted by On July - 24 - 2010

The Book of Mormon contains the fulness of the gospel. Gospel is a word one hears tossed loosely about in our modern world, but its meaning is defined in numerous ways. One fact remains — the word is linked with scriptures and churches.  The Hebrew definition is simple.  It is usually translated as ”glad tidings of great joy.” The Greek translation is “good news.” So what is the “good news” all about?  It’s the redeeming blood of our Savior Jesus Christ as the integral centerpiece of a “plan” given to us by Heavenly Father.  The plan involves creation, birth, the fall, the atonement, redemption from the fall and our eventual return to Him.  Principles and ordinances of the gospel are involved.  We are invited again and again to enlist our full participation and involvement in the plan. Many of these principles and ordinances are called “saving principles and... Read the rest of this entry »

Hiding Our Sins

Posted by On July - 4 - 2010

If you look around in a typical LDS ward, you will see people who are striving to do the right thing. We come to church in right attire, men in white shirts and suits, women in modest dresses. We present the right image of being clean and pure. On occasion, we talk of repentance as [...]  Read More →

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony for the UC Berkeley school of Molecular and Cell Biology. The invited speaker was Dr. Bruce Ames, a noted scientist, who for decades has produced ground breaking work in genetics and how various substances impact our health at the molecular level. Dr. Ames provided a [...]  Read More →
