The Lives of Faithful Mormons

Archive for the ‘Conversion Stories’ Category

Karen, a “Mormon” woman (member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) has created a podcast series to both share her personal story of her 25-year journey of faith, and to reflect more generally on questions and topics related to faith. The podcast series can be found at IBelievePodcast.com and at Facebook. The podcast is for “all interested truth-seekers–agnostics, religiously unaffiliated, spiritual but not religious, and friends of all faiths.” Topics that will be addressed through podcasts include “spotlights on the very conception of truth, drawing from the Word of God and it’s reliability; insights on Christian living; scriptural devotionals; holiday messages; special features on navigating the challenges of our culture; womanhood; the meaning of life; God’s eternal Plan of Happiness; the Restoration of the Savior’s Church to the earth; Press Plaza (lay responses to select news items); interviews, and more.” Here... Read the rest of this entry »

~by Michelle Al Fox is a Mormon woman. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints three years ago today. She’s been creating videos to share what the gospel of Jesus Christ means to her. The following video, “This is Happiness” was created to celebrate the anniversary of her baptism. The young man in the video was the missionary who baptized her. He shares a little of his experience as a missionary in the video as well. This video captures so beautifully how the gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of joy. That doesn’t mean life won’t have its hard times. As Al acknowledges, Since joining the church there has been a lot of hard times. A lot of changes. Trials. That’s life. But because of getting baptized, because of the Gospel, because of Christ, not once- not even for a second, did that happiness go away. Not only that, but it got stronger, and stronger!… The Gospel is hands down, the biggest blessing there ever is. What struck... Read the rest of this entry »

He was an Evangelical Christian pastor for nearly three decades. He held “nearly every ministerial position there is, including pastor, evangelist, youth pastor, children’s minister, Christian education director and more” who “taught and believed that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — [sometimes] referred to as the Mormon Church — was a cult. He had no experience with the church’s members and no reason to assume otherwise.” So what would lead Tom Scott and his wife to convert to Mormonism? Read their story here. (Quotes from above are from the story.) Hear Tom and his wife Maggie tell their Mormon conversion stories in the following video, It’s True : An Evangelical Pastor’s Journey to Truth in the Mormon Church:  Read More →

Pioneer Day Posts and Links

Posted by On July - 24 - 2012

Today is a holiday for Mormons called Pioneer Day. We celebrate the arrival of Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley and also celebrate modern-day pioneers and the sacrifices they have made in faith. Pioneer Day is a Utah state holiday (since it’s part of Utah history) (fireworks happen twice in July for Utahans), but it’s also celebrated by many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints around the world. We’ve got a lot of links for you to peruse if you are either curious about what Pioneer Day is about, or if you are looking for stories and reflections about Mormon pioneer heritage. You can enjoy the recent Pioneer Day Celebration with Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Katherine Jenkins in its entirety on YouTube (what a wonderful blessing social media can be!) Read more posts from our archives about Mormon pioneers (both 19th-century pioneers and modern-day pioneers), as well as reflections on pioneer stories: Portraits of Mormon Women: Bindu Inspired... Read the rest of this entry »

Well, we’re a day late, but here are some more Mormon conversion stories in response to a reader who was asking about former Catholics who became Mormon, and why they chose such a path. (See one former Catholic’s story in our previous post.) But first, here’s a snippet from a 2010 Mormon conversion stories post that we think is worth quoting again, quoting President Gordon B. Hinckley: We recognize the good in all people. We recognize the good in all churches, in their efforts to improve mankind and to teach principles that lead to good, stable, productive living. To people everywhere we simply say, ‘You bring with you all the good that you have, and let us add to it. That is the principle on which we work.’ We as Mormons believe there has been a restoration of truth that can add to the good that people already have in their lives, and help them both face the challenges that life brings and also deepen its joys . Reading Mormon conversion stories can help you... Read the rest of this entry »

(Karen, a Mormon convert, is pictured above in a video (part 1 of 2) where she shares her Mormon conversion story.) - – - A reader, Mandy, recently asked the following question: Do you know of any Mormons who converted from Catholicism? What are their reasons for converting? Immediately, my friend Karen came to mind. Following is her conversion story in her own words (in two parts). You can also read more of her story at Mormon Scholars Testify. We’ll be linking to a few more stories of Catholics who converted to Mormonism tomorrow.  Read More →

On one of our Easter Sunday posts, we featured a painting by Rose Datoc Dall, a Mormon artist. We wanted to share a little more about Rose today. Rose’s faith in and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ are an inspiration. Rose is married and is a devoted, full-time mother to four children. She does her artwork from a studio in her home. Rose talks about her decision to be a stay-at-home mom in the Mormon.org video below, on her Mormon.org profile, or in this interview at Today’s Mama. (The Today’s Mama interview explores more about what a typical day is like for Rose, how motherhood has influenced her artwork, advice for young moms who are wondering how to balance their dreams/passions with motherhood, and more. It’s worth a read!) Rose is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  God’s plan for families is one of the things that appealed to her about Mormonism. She writes: I joined the Church when I was age 19 after having known about... Read the rest of this entry »

Portraits of Mormon Women: Bindu

Posted by On August - 20 - 2011

~by Michelle Several weeks ago, we linked to a variety of “Mormon pioneer” stories, both of early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as modern Mormon pioneers. Bindu Sabbavarapu’s story was one to which we linked. She has given us permission to share some of her story (and photos) here. Bindu grew up in India, where the predominant religion is Hinduism. Although she showed some interest in Christianity even as a young child, she hid that interest because of her father’s strict Hindu beliefs and activity. Ten years ago, Bindu’s friend introduced Bindu to missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A little meeting with a handful of Latter-day Saints and four Mormon missionaries began a process that changed her life. “I never thought of becoming a Christian until I met the missionaries and learned more about the Church. I learned from the scriptures and understood the standards of the Church like going... Read the rest of this entry »
