The Best Day of the Week

Posted by On May - 3 - 2011

My favorite day of the week is Sunday. It is the one day I get to forget about worldly cares and just enjoy being with my family, focus on my spirituality, and participate in uplifting activities. I love how different the Sabbath Day feels from the rest of the week. On the Sabbath I dress up and put on makeup and stay that way all day. On the Sabbath I learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ. On the Sabbath I relax and rest. On the Sabbath I play with my husband and baby. On the Sabbath I read the scriptures and the Ensign. On the Sabbath I listen to beautiful music and feel the Spirit. I feel deep sorrow whenever I hear people say they dislike Sunday. I think their negative attitudes come from their misunderstanding of the purpose of the Sabbath. The Lord did not give us the commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy to punish us or to benefit Himself. Jesus said, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27). This scripture means, as one of my BYU religion... Read the rest of this entry »

Humility before God

Posted by On April - 15 - 2011

Understanding our Need for Humility Of all the Christian virtues, humility is most essential as it makes all other virtues possible.  In order to develop humility, a man must believe whole-heartedly that he personally needs God.  Until then (and absent a shattering change in circumstances), the delusion of self-sufficiency is not easily overcome.  Ever quick to declare “[b]y the strength of my hand … I have done these things” (2 Nephi 20:13), man rarely thanks God for such well-formed hands or a life laden with talents and blessings. Life’s challenges – obtaining our daily bread, problems with health, family, or finances – will remind us, if we are spiritually perceptive, of our constant need for divine assistance.  In fact, God intends that this life to be a time for testing (Abraham 3:25), allowing “opposition in all things” (2 Nephi 2:11).  This “opposition” includes enticement from our common adversary, the devil, who tempts us to commit sin by violating God’s... Read the rest of this entry »

The Door is Open

Posted by On March - 5 - 2011

I have a chocolate lab named Tess.  We love her and she is madly devoted to us. She is a sweet dog that has moments of brilliance, but for the most part is not that bright.  For example, often times when open the back door to let her outside, she will walk onto the patio, then turn around and come right back into the house – even when I know she needs to “go potty” (yes, we talk to our dog like  Read More →

Follow-up Discussion

Posted by On February - 18 - 2011

photo by Steve Goodwin Instead of posting all the responses I got, I decided to write a follow-up discussion answering some of the questions people asked. When reading the comments, I was extremely disappointed in the immaturity others displayed. There are appropriate and inappropriate ways to voice our opinions. Only a couple people shared their views with maturity. My favorite comment labeled my blog a “bigoted hate site.” Tell me if that doesn’t shout hypocrisy! We should all be respectful of other beliefs. I know most people disagree with me and that is fine. I do not expect them to convert to my way of thinking; I simply want them to understand my point of view. And I am willing to hear yours too if you do so respectfully. Thank you. Older or infertile couplesWe are all supposed to strive for marriage, yet for some it does not happen until later in life when childbearing years are far behind. Other couples may be infertile and not able to adopt. These situations... Read the rest of this entry »

Mormons and Gay Marriage

Posted by On February - 15 - 2011

photo by Matt Cook It is known news that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) contributed much to stop gay marriage from becoming legal in California. However, most people do not understand fully why we are against it. I will address common questions concerning Mormons and their opposition to gay marriage. Are Mormons against gay people? No. As the expression goes, we “hate the sin, not the sinner.” That creed applies to any person struggling with sin, not just gay people. What we disapprove of is the homosexual lifestyle. There are members of our Church who are homosexual yet as worthy as heterosexual members because they do not participate in that lifestyle. Elder Holland said, “Let me make it clear that attractions alone, troublesome as they may be, do not make one unworthy. The First Presidency has stated, ‘There is a distinction between immoral thoughts and feelings and participating in either immoral heterosexual or any homosexual... Read the rest of this entry »

When it hits home

The father looks up wistfully from his reading; another argument and another angry outburst of frustration. It had been only a couple of years yesterday when his youngest son announced that he and his young family had left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And when his son came to visit with his [...]  Read More →
