Uniquely December: Go Caroling Day

Posted by On December - 20 - 2011

Did you grow up in a family that went Christmas caroling?  Every year our Camp Fire groups would climb on a haywagon and sing our way through the streets of our little town.  Sometimes we would walk the halls of the local nursing home as well.  Although I grew up in a family that loved to sing, I only remember us caroling as a family one time.  I’m sure I enjoyed it, but I only specifically remember one house where we sang.  It was my mom’s friend, a single lady who’s children were grown, and while I’m sure she loved it, the longer we sang the sillier I felt.  I just wanted to get out of there. I wanted to find a cheerful uplifting video of Christmas carolers to share with you today.  Instead what I found was an Internet FULL of amateur videos conveying everything that I remember being painful in my own caroling life (freezing cold, people looking at you bored and confused).  So, sorry.  No classic caroling videos.... Read the rest of this entry »

Uniquely December: Find An Evergreen Day

Posted by On December - 19 - 2011

Today I’m re-sharing a post of one of my favorite childhood holiday memories … The winter holidays are meant for kids.  Santa Claus is real, snow falls solely for sledding and building snow families, and a baby (just like I used to be, they’ll say) was born in the hay.  When else do we let them bring trees in the house or bury them with brand new toys, shiny paper, and glittery ribbon?  In the thick of it, they’ll tell you every bit of it is magical.  It’s not until we get a little older that particular pieces of that holiday magic begin to plant themselves in a special part of our memory.  For me, the enchantment was the Christmas tree. Growing up in Iowa, the formula for the perfect Christmas tree involved waiting for a bitter cold day and swirling biting winds.  The whole family piled out of the station wagon at the country Christmas tree farm, picked up a hacksaw and trudged acres and acres to the farthest, most un-harvested... Read the rest of this entry »

happy Christmas everyone.

Posted by On December - 19 - 2011

pin I am so excited. Justin and I will be heading down to Texas in just a couple of days.  So tonight we had a little mini Christmas celebration. We made yummy treats, opened a present, read the real Christmas story (Luke 2) and watched some of the new Bible videos produced by the LDS Church.  I’m amazed with how they have put them together. I would never have thought they were shot in Utah. They really do look like you are in the Holy Land. You can check them out here.  Merry Christmas everyone. -Heather  Read More →

2011 First Presidency Christmas Devotional

Posted by On December - 11 - 2011

Did you watch the First Presidency Christmas Devotional last Sunday? Wasn’t it wonderful? It’s one of the few things that light the Christmas spirit in me (I’m somewhat of a Scrooge, for those of you who don’t know me). I am watching it again now because I missed some of it and wanted to remember the parts that touched me so I can share them with you: Opening & Closing Love the wintry blue dresses instead of red. The French horns in “The First Noel” sounded heavenly. The entire song was angelic. MoTab sang “Silent Night” with much reverence and sincerity. The harp was beautiful. President Uchtdorf “Don’t ever play with fire–an important message with literal and figurative implications for everyone, not only children.” “The Lord does not expect that we commit to move mountains, but He does require that we bring as gifts our best efforts to move ourselves, one foot in front of the... Read the rest of this entry »

The Special Gift That Was Given

Posted by On December - 11 - 2011

The tiny babe who in Bethlehem’s manger lay was no ordinary child. Some people called Him the son of David. Others called Him the son of Joseph. The scriptures call Him the son of David, the son of Mary, the son of man, the Son of God. He whose name is Immanuel, meaning God is with us, was born to be the King of kings and the Lord of lords. This child was the promised Messiah – even Jesus the Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God. For hundreds of years prophecies had foretold the birth of a Messiah, and on that starry night in the city of David, the One who would fulfill those prophecies was born in a humble stable with a manger as His cradle. In the Book of Mormon, in 3 Nephi 1: 13 we read, “Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.” Whether... Read the rest of this entry »

Remember Christ

Posted by On November - 27 - 2011

“Jesus is the reason for the season” is more often said than remembered. This Christmas use the following ideas to remember Jesus, for this holiday is in celebration of His birth. Have each family member give a gift to Jesus by writing down a promise to do or not do something, such as helping more, being nicer to a sibling, or not lying. Keep the written promises in a wrapped box under the tree. On Christmas Day, New Year’s, or the following Christmas, open up the box and have everyone evaluate his or her improvement. Set aside one night, such as Christmas Eve, as a holy night of reading from the scriptures the Christmas story and other stories of Jesus’s life and teachings. Sing together or play on an instrument the Christmas hymns. Follow a scriptural advent calendar, reading a scripture about Jesus every night. Involve the family in service: the Savior’s life was all about serving others. There are plenty of opportunities during Christmas. Visit friends,... Read the rest of this entry »

What a special night my daughters have planned for Utah in celebration of our Savior’s birth and Christmas. You, your family, your friends and co-workers are all invited to join them for Twist & Shout’s Christmas Concert 2011. It will be an evening filled with song, dance, and laughter, and even a little emotion as they celebrate the return of Utah soldiers from Iraq. The concert is on December 20th at 7:00 p.m. American Leadership Academy 898 West 1100 South Spanish Fork, UT Did I mention it’s FREE for everyone in attendance. So join them as they celebrate Christmas, joined by special guest, Jessie Funk. Jessie has “gone country” with the release of her new CD “Dance in the Rain.” You may have heard her songs on the radio as you drive around Utah. Jessie has released five solo albums, published five books, has toured 36 states with the Broadway musical “Footloose,” performed as an opening act for Donny Osmond, Josh Grayson and... Read the rest of this entry »
