“What would your life look like if you took your love to your loved-ones, and your frustrations to the Lord (instead of vice-versa)?” Such was the introduction to an amazing hour spent with John & Bonnie Lund, who visited our Stake for a fireside, just this last Sunday evening. I’m so glad I went. I was feeling a little weary that afternoon/evening, and was of two minds to go. Knowing what I know now, skipping out would have been a great loss to me. Here are some notes I took (the fullness which can certainly be found in Bro. Lund’s published works). Love and trust are not one and the same. Trust is based on consistent good choices. The following I share, upon request, as a Sacrament talk offered in my current capacity as Second Counselor in the Stake Young Women’s Presidency. “You Can Make It.” When I was a teenager, the thought occurred to me, “What if my parents meant well in raising me as a member of the LDS Church, but what if they were wrong, and the whole thing is some kind of fairy tale? How will I know if it’s true, and if it is, how am I doing?” Dallin H. Oaks spoke about the difference between testimony and conversion, “Testimony is to know and to feel; conversion is to know and to become.” As w/ most members of the church, my conversion process began in the manner described by Alma: 26-27. This touching music video from Becky Kelley Where’s the Line to See Jesus? is sure to help everyone who hears it get in the right frame of mind for Christmas. The true story behind the music: “Where’s the Line to See Jesus?” While at the mall a few years ago, Becky’s then four year old nephew, Spencer, saw kids lined up to see Santa Claus. Having been taught as a toddler that Christmas is the holiday that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, he asked his mom, “where’s the line to see Jesus”? Becky’s sister mentioned this to her father, Steve Haupt, who immediately became inspired and jotted some words down to the song in just a few minutes. After putting music to the words, and doing a quick home recording, he received a great response from friends. Her father asked if Becky wanted to record the song to see what could happen with it. There are few messages repeated as frequently in the scriptures as this; ask and ye shall receive. But have you ever noticed how often this similar message is written in the scriptures – “Whatsoever you shall ask the Father… it shall be granted you”? It’s in there a TON. So how exactly does it work? Do we just ask? You might say, “What’s the catch?” Well, there’s no catch. The scriptures make that clear. But there are conditions, or qualifiers that must be in place for the promise to be fulfilled. What are those qualifiers? A few years ago I compiled a list of all the scriptures I could find that carried this message, with all the qualifying statements. In other words, if the verse said, “whatsoever ye ask in faith, ye shall receive,” then I would write down, “in faith,” and count how many other scriptures listed faith as a qualifier for the promise.
