I Believe In Christ: Are Mormons Christian?

Posted by On February - 28 - 2012

by Nora Hess Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, frequently nicknamed “Mormons,” are avid followers of Christ. A scripture from The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, which is the religious record of an ancient native people who lived in the Americas for thousands of years both before and after Christ’s birth, puts it this way: And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins (The Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25:26) A typical Mormon does indeed spend much time every day talking of Christ, studying His words, expressing gratitude and praying to the Father in Christ’s name, thinking about Him, and teaching children and others about Him. Every week during Sunday meetings, committed Mormons partake of the sacrament, where they promise God... Read the rest of this entry »

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

Posted by On February - 23 - 2012

Just after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven after His resurrection, angels proclaimed to His disciples that He would return again one day to reign on the earth for 1,000 years. From that time to this, Christians throughout the world have eagerly awaited His return. The period of time just preceding Christ’s return is called the “last days.” It is the specified time, period, or age in which the necessary prerequisites to the Second Coming will occur. The Last Days The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (inadvertently referred to at times as “The Mormon Church” by the media) teaches that we are now living in the last days. The last days are the days of the dispensation of the fullness of times that is referred to in Ephesians 1:10, when God will gather together in one all things in Christ. Through Joseph Smith, the founding prophet of Mormonism, all the truth that was made known to all the holy prophets since the world began has been gathered together... Read the rest of this entry »

Heaven Names Its Own Price

Posted by On February - 16 - 2012

Missy (2nd row, 2nd from the left) and her family. My dearest friend lives 1000 miles away. The telephone is our favorite, most esteemed invention. I should add CORDLESS telephone. For some reason the webcam, email, online chat thing just doesn’t fly with us. Probably because we both do chores and move while we talk. Probably because we’re so close that we’ve become random thoughts in each other’s head. It’s a rare, treasured friendship. Missy shared a quote with me yesterday. It’s one of those quotes which sheds light on everything you’ve been going through. I loved the words the moment they made vibes through my telephone and resonated through my soul. “..Hell is not easily conquered: yet we have this consolation with us — the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price... Read the rest of this entry »

Snippets for Relief Society 2012 Use search term George Albert Smith to view more for this week or for other weeks What an awesome, timely topic! Are Mormons Christian? What do they believe about Christ? This lesson has potential for some of the best class discussions ever. Like George Albert Smith noticed, many people believe we’re not Christian, or that we worship a different Christ. It’s a sad play on words. Christ is already a favorite topic on this blog. Here are some links to posts that will help with this lesson: Light of Christ Who Loves Christ Most? Walking on the Sea Are Mormons Christian? Your biggest success will be to draw a clear path and connection for the class to the Savior. Help the class feel their own closeness and possibilities with Christ.  Read More →

Book of Mormon – Week 6

Posted by On February - 2 - 2012

Snippets for Sunday School 2012. Use search term Book of Mormon to view more for this week or for other weeks. There are several rich topics in this week’s lesson.  Beautiful gospel ideas.  In fact, there easily could be 5-8 blog posts from just this one lesson. In our Stake Book of Mormon class, we average 1.5 hours of discussion for only a few paragraphs and a few verses.  Fitting the depth and magnitude of everything in 2 Nephi 1-2 into 40 minutes AND do it all justice is not realistic.  In fact, for a better class, it’s never a great idea to push through so much.  So read the chapters, prayerfully read the lesson and what jumps out at you, what you have the most feeling for – is the direction you need to take the class.  You’re the teacher at this time because your focus, understanding and insights are the ones needed at this time. That goes for any lesson or any talk. Ok, opposition in all things…. For it must needs be,... Read the rest of this entry »

When the religious cast stones

Keep Holding On!

Posted by On January - 9 - 2012

Wow, I have not written on this thing in a long time, and I probably should be finishing up my French homework at this moment but instead I felt that I should come and write down everything that is going through my head.  I’m writing this mostly just for me as most of my blog posts have been, but I’m always interested in others’ points of view and maybe someone is feeling something like how I do and can use what I’m about to write. I have gone through some really difficult experiences the past few months, some due to my choices and others due to just circumstances of life that I have no control over.  Throughout all of this, I have tried to stay positive and keep moving forward even when I wanted nothing more to give up.  Each time that I have kept going, I have been blessed by my Heavenly Father with something here and there.  I’m so grateful to know that He is always there for me, but at times, I wonder if He is the only one that is there. Most of you... Read the rest of this entry »

Where is He?

Posted by On December - 26 - 2011

Wise men of old came from afar asking the timeless question, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:2). Following the star that they had seen in the east, they were led to where the Christ Child was. Upon their arrival they presented the new born baby with precious gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh. Have you ever stopped to wonder why the scriptures never tell us exactly how many wise men came to worship the new born King? Have you ever wondered why there is no mention of their names or identities? I submit that it is because they were not the focal point of the lesson that is being taught. The lesson that is being taught is that Christ is the One upon whom our focus should be centered. Like the wise men of old, we should come near to worship Him. For truly He is worthy of all praise and adoration! As we celebrate this joyous Christmas season, perhaps we need to pause for a moment and take a look around and ask the same question that was asked of old,... Read the rest of this entry »
