An Interesting discussion on Baptism
LDS/Mormon-Awareness posted the following on their Facebook Page: Romans 6:1-4…Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all … Continue reading → Read More →
Family Foreordination
Yesterday we had the blessing of witnessing the baptism of yet another grandchild. Recently, it was Molly and Spencer. These choice young spirits who have been sent to our family in the third generation continue to amaze and humble me. Present by invitation at yesterday’s baptism was Alex’s best friend, not a member of the Church. At age eight he is already a missionary. Even before that he gifted his kindergarten teacher with a Book of Mormon. There is little doubt in my mind these spirits who are coming to earth in these last days are uniquely prepared for the days that lie ahead. Alex carries his scriptures with him in a special carrying case with the image of a basketball imprinted on it. Our grandchildren are all exceptional (you may discount these words if you choose, because it’s a grandfather talking about his grandchildren) but I fear no contradiction for those who know them well. Alex In a note to Alex I observed the new layer of snow on the ground (I know,... Read the rest of this entry »
Mormons Believe in The Book of Mormon and the Bible
Watch this video below to learn more about what the Book of Mormon means to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe the Book of Mormon has power to change lives. We invite people to read it and discover its teachings for themselves, and seek to know from God if it is true. Mormons also cherish the Bible as the word of God. The Bible and Book of Mormon work together as testaments of Christ. Read more about what Mormons believe about the Bible, including LDS members’ feelings about this sacred book of scripture. There is much focus on the Bible right now as we recognize the 400th anniversary of the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. You might enjoy browsing the links at LDS Media talk that focus on the KJV and its value in the lives of all Christians, Mormons included. You can request a free copy of the Bible or request a free copy of The Book of Mormon at Mormon.org. You can also read or listen to the Book of Mormon online. You can also read the full... Interpreting Impressions of the Spirit
One of the greatest blessings of membership in the LDS Church is the gift of the Holy Ghost. Of course we are not the only people in the world with whom the Lord works through his spirit. But we are the only people who have claim upon the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. That is a very unique and special claim. When asked by a President of the United States, “How is your religion different from all the other religions of the day?” The Prophet Joseph Smith answered, “We are different from all other religions in the mode of baptism (immersion) and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands (by those who have authority).” God inspires all In section 130 of the Doctrine and Covenants we read, “A man may receive the Holy Ghost, and it may descend upon him and not tarry with him.” All honest seekers of the truth can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost, leading them to Jesus Christ and His gospel. People everywhere can be inspired by the Holy Ghost. However, the... Read the rest of this entry »
Changing Requirements of Perfection
After reviewing one of my previous essays, a thoughtful reader asked my opinion about the idea of perfection and if the requirements for salvation had changed. He said, “Open just about any page of the book of Leviticus and you’ll see laws that were of life and death importance to the early church, but not today. In contrast, there is no mention of baptism or confirmation in the Old Testament as a requirement for salvation, yet today, they are taught as essential.” He also asked about the need for the Word of Wisdom, temple ordinances, plural marriage and the second anointing. He concluded, “If God is eternal, and heaven doesn’t change, shouldn’t the requirements to get into heaven be the same, no matter when you were born or what culture you lived in?” Although his email was private, great questions like these deserve a response that can be shared in my blog so others who might be interested can benefit from the dialog. Perfection means completed The savior... Read the rest of this entry »
Baptisms – What Mormons Believe
Matthew 3:11 ”I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthyto bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire“ One of the reasons we don’t baptize infants is because, as the Bible says in both Matthew and Mark 1:4, we are to “baptize…unto repentance.” Infants are not capable of the recognition required for the process of repentance. Eight is the youngest a person may be for baptism in the LDS Church. Recently I was asked “why eight”? For Mormons baptism is just a beginning, it’s the first ordinance and the first step. It is the gateway for progression in the gospel. Right after baptism comes the even more important ordinance, the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. And from my own experiences, as well as those of my six children, 8-year olds are very... Read the rest of this entry »
From The Mouth of Carole-Ann Witham!
Today I have the opportunity to share with you the story of a wonderful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and how she came to find the Church. Her name is Carole-Ann Witham, and she has been an example to me of faith in Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. I was first able to start talking with Carole over the phone at the beginning of this year in about February, and since that time, I have been able to work with her and help her come to know more about the gospel until she was baptized. Carole’s story really helps to illustrate the importance of having the Spirit in our lives and following the prompting and feelings that we receive from Him. I am reminded of a talk given by Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. He said: Impressions of the Spirit can come in response to urgent prayer or unsolicited when needed. Sometimes the Lord reveals truth to you when you are not actively seeking it, such as when you... Read the rest of this entry »

My Interview with Mormon.org
On this Pioneer day, I decided to answer all the personal questions that you are asked when you fill out the profile on Mormon.org. There are a whole lot more under the FAQ section (about 80) but that will have to wait for another day when I have more time. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of answering these questions and felt like I was being interviewed, thus the title of this blog post. 01. Please explain the part prayer plays in your life? Having grown up with daily prayer, I can’t imagine a day go by in which I don’t communicate with my Heavenly Father in prayer. We start the day in prayer as a family asking for the Lord’s blessing upon us as we work. We end the day in prayer the same way, usually kneeling by the bed, reporting our activities to God and thanking him for his help. We give thanks for the food we eat at mealtimes and participate in public prayers in our weekly worship service. It is through prayer and reading scriptures that I feel close to God and directed... When Bad Things Happen to Good People: One woman’s journey to overcome the effects of abuse and addiction
~by Candace I know this is the true Church of our Savior Jesus Christ and that we are led by a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson. My story: My life challenges started at a very early age. I was eight years old when I was first molested. He was a friend of the family and I had a child’s love for him. He broke my heart and severely injured my spirit. Unable to tell my parents, my trust of people around me was shaken. I became very insecure and frightened of life. When I reached my teens, my insecurities and lack of participation in school activities became evident and a concerned counselor started drawing me out and I felt comforted by his concern. But, once again my life was jolted when he betrayed my trust. One day he offered me a ride home. I accepted his kind gesture. I soon realized he had other intentions. We took a ride into the hills near our town and the unspeakable happened. Once again I was shaken to the core and afraid to go to my parents. I had no idea how to deal with any...
