Sunday as a Mormon

Posted by On January - 11 - 2010

Carmen's Blessing 024Saturday night:  I ask all of my children to gather their church clothes so we won’t be looking for them in the morning.

Survey whether we have needed snacks and quick breakfast items.

In preparation for faking sick in the morning, my oldest child who is unhappy about not having enough time watching TV says he doesn’t feel good.

Sunday morning:  Attempt three times to wake up children.

Oldest son brings the trusty barf bowl into his bedroom and proceeds to cough and gag over it, possibly even trying to produce actual vomit.  Doesn’t happen.  Child is faking, parents are annoyed, child is told if he wants to watch any TV anytime soon, he better get dressed for church.  In a moment of miraculous healing, child makes himself some breakfast.

Late for church for some reason.

Sacrament meeting ends, husband goes to teach class while bringing our 16-month-old daughter, and I head to the piano to play for Primary (our Sunday school for kids).

Chorister teaches a nice song about Jesus and speaks about what it means to lead or guide someone.  A 5-year-old child informs us that his mom leads him into the bathroom every morning to get the “boogers” out of his eyes.  All adults in the room try really hard not to laugh.

Return home, make a quick lunch, realize middle son’s finger is infected, take action with some home remedies that my dad used to do when I had infected hangnails.

Realize my son is really good at speaking with a British accent which he has been doing all afternoon.  Seriously, he has the inflections down.  Start mentally planning his career as an actor.

Bring screaming daughter to ward choir practice with me because my husband has a migraine.

Put shoes on daughter at her demand.  Remove shoes when she objects.

Laugh because daughter is staring at the pianist until he can’t concentrate on the music.

Chase laughing daughter all over the chapel as I’m trying to leave.

Return home, prepare pork roast, put it in the oven.

Flip roast over, automatically turn the oven off and continue to “cook” the roast even though it’s no longer cooking.

Timer goes off.  Check roast.  Discover it wasn’t cooking for the last half hour like I thought it was.

Turn oven back on.  Cook roast for another half hour.  Check roast.  Repeat the process every 10 minutes until it’s actually done.  Meanwhile, eat the mashed potatoes that would have been perfectly timed if I hadn’t turned the oven off like a moron.

7:30pm  Eat some pork roast and broccoli.

Clean up chewed but not swallowed broccoli off of the floor.

Get children ready for bed.  Making decent progress despite the delayed dinner.

Oldest son informs me he “forgot” to do his homework that is due tomorrow – a pamphlet he is supposed to make and a book report.

Try hard not to lose it.  Stay up with son until 10:30 when his homework is finally completed.

Stay up a while longer while I attempt to destress.

What was your Sunday like?
