woman_at_the_well2Saturday night my computer died.  I didn’t know it was dead.  I knew it was ticking me off when it denied access, telling me it failed some group client thingermabob, and I had no idea what to do.  I did search after search and after going to ward choir, I asked a few of my computer savvy buddies if they knew anything about this Vista induced message.  One man said, “That’s over my head.”

This other man talked about it being a security issue that was put in place and offered on the spot to take my computer home with him.  This ended up being a really good thing because it was much easier to fight the urge to try “one more thing” like I had been doing the past 24 hours.  It was good to have it gone.

I wanted to know what I could do for him.  I told him, “I’m a really good cook.  Maybe I could make a few meals for your family?”  He said he only eats his wife’s cooking, but she confided in me that he really likes the peppermint bark I made a couple weeks ago.  That’s a start, but I don’t think peppermint bark quite covers the hours and energy he put into my only 18-month-old machine with the one year warranty.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude because of everything he did.  He discovered the DVD drive wasn’t working properly.  Funny, that’s what I suspected soon after the purchase, but I was blown off by the customer service rep. who insisted that since the device manager didn’t show there was a problem, then it must be working.  Don’t you love getting the run around when you spend hundreds of dollars on something?

So he said he would head out to buy a drive and I could pay him back.  Gladly!  Money is tight, but it will be tighter if I don’t have my computer because I do a bit of online work.  After testing the DVD drive, he discovered my hard drive was bad!  Just as we were researching which hard drive I should purchase, we had pretty much decided on one brand for a good price, but then it turned out that was the same brand that lasted a whole year and a half.  I was willing to pay $40 more for the one with a better reputation and 5 year warranty.

He even went the extra mile by attempting to install XP on my computer because I wasn’t sure which things I experienced problems with were related to Vista and I was happy with XP.  He was able to put it on there, but there were drivers that weren’t available to make certain things work, so then he put Vista back on it.  He had been working on my computer since Monday and I hoped he wouldn’t make it too big of a priority because he has a family and job too.

Just when I thought he couldn’t get any cooler, he called this morning with the update about my computer and said he would be happy to have me not pay him back for the DVD drive if I would test his software he was developing.  I would have been happy to pay for the drive and test his software after everything he did for me.  If it weren’t for him, I would either have no computer right now or I probably would have made a foolish purchase (that I know dang well I can’t afford).

This was an answer to my prayers and here I type from my well-running machine that seems to be better than what I got new.  I am so touched that he cared that much for me and my family.  I feel inspired to do more for others.

How have others blessed you?
