This Christmas I was in search of truly Christlike moments. I tried everything I could to get that special Christmas feeling. I went caroling with friends, made treats for people, invited friends over for dinner, and participated in our Stake devotional that was pretty awesome.
But nothing compared to the night my brother cooked dinner for our family. It’s become a weekly tradition for my friend to come over on Wednesdays. We usually cook together, but sometimes one of us is exhausted and the other will take over. The night my brother was in town and wanted us to come to my mom’s for dinner, it was Wednesday and he asked me to invite my friend. I called her immediately and said we would love for her to come. He didn’t want us to bring anything. He just wanted us to relax and be served.
My friend hasn’t been home to see her family in over three years and she has no one in the area. She has never been married, doesn’t have children, and we have become like her second family. I think she was a little nervous though about intruding on time with my family. The next day she called and said she was exhausted and was just going to go home. I tried to persuade her, but no luck. So I called my mom and let her know.
About 3 minutes later, my brother called and asked, “What’s her phone number?” I laughed, “I already tried to talk her into it, but she’s too tired.”
“Well, she has to eat, doesn’t she?”
“Yeah. I think she just doesn’t want to fall asleep in front of the family.”
“Tell her she is cordially invited to nap.”
I was so touched that my brother wanted to reach out to my friend. That meant the world to me. So I called her back and let her know how bad my brother wanted her to come, gave her the address, and we were thrilled when she arrived. She had a wonderful time with my family and we all enjoyed her company. She also asked my brother about issues with her tires. She was driving around on a spare and wanted to replace one tire, but she was told she would have to buy two so they would wear evenly.
My friend is working a minimum wage job right now and barely scraping by, having to pick and choose which bills she will pay this month. Just when I thought my brother couldn’t be any kinder, he pulled me aside the next night during New Year’s Eve and discreetly handed me $100 to give to my friend.
I was overjoyed. Best Christmas moment by far. What was your favorite Christmas moment this year?
